Special Manpower Development Program
Special Manpower Development Program or SMDP is project undertaken by Ministry of Information technology of the Government of India aiming to impart training in VLSI design and related software to engineering students pursuing Masters or Doctoral programmes in the domains of Computer Science, Electronics, IT etc.
History
SMDP or Special Manpower project was launched in the 9th Five-year plan to boost capability of India in the field of VLSI design and the development of software tools associated With It.The program is funded by Ministry of Communication and Information Technology.
The main emphasis is on research and it is helping M.Tech and PhD students in completing their research projects on VLSI.. A working committee set up by Department Of Information Technology with members from MHRD, UGC, AICTE, NASSCOM, and R&D institutions has come up with the programme. The committee has designed the curriculum for VLSI Design course for the Participating Institutions and of this project. The Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools and the hardware platform that are required for establishing VLSI Design Laboratory have also been suggested. The programme envisages training of AbOUT 1930 students (per year) for the various types by the terminal year of the programme from 25 Participating Institutions with the help of 7 Resource Centers.
SMDP-I
In 1998 SMDP-I project was launched as a part of 9th five-year plan of India with a view to increase the share of India in VLSI design from 0.5% to 5%.The programme was implemented across 19 institutions, it includes 7 Resource Centers (RC's) and 12 Participating Institutions (PI's). The first phase of the project was accomplished in March 2005.
The programme envisages two major elements :
- Inviting International Guest Faculty to conduct seminar on specialized topics of VLS I Design
- Provide financial assistance to students and faculty of RCs and PIs to attend and present paper in national and international conferences in the area of VLSI Design
SMDP-II
SMDP-II was started in 2005 after completion of phase-I after infusion of more funds. In the second phase, 5 more Participating Institutions (PI's) were added in the programme. Advanced VLSI design laboratories equipped with CAD/CAM software tools have been setup in all the participating institutions.
