Soweto Kliptown Youth

Soweto Kliptown Youth (SKY) is a community centre located in Kliptown, a township of the Johannesburg suburb Soweto. It was founded in 1987 by Bob Nameng, a Kliptown local. SKY is a non-profit organization that provides a number of social support programmes to the community.

Programmes

  • Meals and tutoring: Through a programme spondored by the NBA's Basketball Without Borders Africa, the SKY centre provides daily meals, tutoring and mentoring for local schoolchildren.
  • Elderly care: SKY provides safe transportation to and from pension distribution points for local pension collectors who often represent an important source of household income but also vulnerable targets for muggings. Transportation to medical appointments is also provided.
  • Visitor education: Guided tours of Kliptown are offered in order to increase external awareness and support for local programmes. SKY also participates in an exchange programme with Nobles high school in Massachusetts, USA.
  • Other objectives: A number of other programmes at the community centre aim to provide organized sports and recreation for children, exposure to arts and culture, HIV/AIDS awareness, life skills training and empowerement for women, and a positive learning environment for the Kliptown youth.
