Sonic the Hedgehog is a fictional character and leading superhero in the self-titled comic book series and the Sonic the Hedgehog animated series. In this universe, he lives on Planet Mobius in Knothole Village, where he belongs to a band of Freedom Fighters that fight to free their world from the iron-fisted rule of the evil dictator Dr. Robotnik.

Description

Sonic is an anthropomorphic, humanoid hedgehog who is endowed with super-speed. Like his counterpart from the series of video games, he wears white gloves on his hands and red running shoes. In DiC's Sonic the Hedgehog and the subsequent comic book, he has a fanatical love for chili dogs, a trait unique to this version of Sonic.

Sonic is depicted as reckless, honest, and quick to rush into trouble. He also despises Robotnik, and enjoys humiliating him on a regular basis. Sonic has a 'little brother' of sorts in Tails, a two-tailed fox and the youngest member of the Freedom Fighters.

Sonic the Hedgehog ("SatAM")

Sonic is champion of the Knothole Freedom Fighters and a hedgehog endowed with super-speed. In most episodes of the show, Sonic usually acquires a power ring during the third act which charges up his speed ability. He is voiced in the animated series by Jaleel White.

Sonic was born during the reign of King Maximillian Acorn, in Mobotropolis, the capital of the sovereign Kingdom of Acorn. Sonic's parents never Appear in The Cartoon; it is assumed that he was raised by his uncle Sir Charles (aka Uncle Chuck). As a child, Sonic used to play with Princess Sally. Sir Charles was a top inventor of the Acorn Kingdom and a personal friend of the King. Following the Great War, a warlord named Julian orchestrated a coup d'état and banished the King. Julian then renamed himself Robotnik and ordered that all citizens of Mobotropolis be roboticized and transformed in mindless slaves. Sonic and Sally, along with several other children, were spirited out of the city and hid inside a woodland camp that would eventually become Knothole Village. At the same time, Uncle Chuck fell into Robotnik's hands and was roboticized; Sonic is continually frustrated by his inability to free his uncle from Robotropolis.

Archie Comics

Sonic's age is left intentionally ambiguous due to relativity resulting his temporary exile in space. It is likely that Sonic's actual biological age is somewhere between sixteen and eighteen, whereas in the games he is nearly always referred to as fifteen.

Youth

Sonic is born during the reign of King Maximillian Acorn, in Mobotropolis, the capital of the sovereign Kingdom of Acorn. His father, Jules Hedgehog, is a soldier in the Great War between the anthromorphic Mobians and the humanoid Overlanders. His mother, Bernadette Hedgehog, raises Sonic with the aid of her brother in law, Sir Charles "Uncle Chuck" Hedgehog. Sonic is orphaned when a corrupt warlord named Julian (aka Robotnik) secretly tamperered with Charles' Roboticizer, which turned Sonic's mother and father into robot slaves.

Sir Charles does his best to raise Sonic on his own, while also trying to find a way to change Sonic's parents back to normal. As penance for the Roboticizer's malfunction, Charles quits his position as Minister of Science and opens a restaurant selling Chili Dogs (beginning Sonic's lifelong love for that food). During this time, Sonic befriends Princess Sally, Rotor, and Antoine D'Coolette. Sonic also helps when Rosemary Prower went into labor, and is present at the birth of Miles "Tails" Prower. That night, King Acorn makes Warlord Julian the new Minister of Science. Julian immediately uses his new position to take over the Kingdom of Acorn, trap the king in the Zone of Silence, and roboticize a large portion of Mobotropolis' population, renaming the city Robotropolis; Julian then renames himself Robotnik. Sonic helps many Mobians escape from the city to the hidden Knothole Village, where they are safe from Robotnik's reach. Later, partly inspired by a doomed group of "Freedom Fighters" that had rebelled against Robotnik only to be roboticized, Sonic and his friends make an oath to be Freedom Fighters themselves. Meanwhile, Sonic's Uncle Chuck falls into Robotnik's hands and is Roboticized. Sonic breaks into Robotropolis to save him, but fails.

Freedom Fighter

Sonic shares many adventures with the Freedom Fighters of Knothole village. Although most are spent combating the insidious Dr. Robotnik and his armies of SWATbots, Sonic also fights an evil alternate reality version of himself, Scourge the Hedgehog, a Roboticized version of Dr. Robotnik from another dimension called Robo-Robotnik, and the early Metal Sonic models. He also meets Knuckles the Echidna, a hero with the same overall mission as he, but nonetheless he cannot get along with personally. During the Mecha Madness story arc, Sonic is captured and subjected to Roboticization, becoming the villainous Mecha Sonic and wreaking havoc on Knothole before being restored to normal.

Eventually, Dr. Robotnik is defeated and killed, seemingly bringing an end to Sonic's days as a hero. Unaccustomed to the slow pace of rebuilding the kingdom, an opportunity arises for Sonic to fight again when Ixis Naugus, a power-hungry sorcerer and former mentor of Robotnik's, resurfaces in Mobotropolis. As King Max's behavior grows more erratic, no one realizes that Naugus is possessing the King's body in a bid to rule Mobotropolis unopposed. Fortunately, Sonic manages to cure Max using the mystical Sword of Acorns, forcing Naugus to flee. Unwilling to quit adventuring, Sonic joins Tails in a globe-trotting journey across Mobius to chase Naugus down, encountering numerous foes along the way. Following many epic adventures, including a run-in with a Roboticized General D'Coolette and his medieval dictatorship in Mercia, the two of them manage to track Naugus to a remote Arctic location, where they best him. Their job done, the duo returns home, only to find themselves embroiled in another war; their old enemy Robo-Robotnik who, having destroyed the Sonic in his own dimension, steps forward to replace the old Robotnik as the main antagonist of the Freedom Fighters.

Like many other Mobians, Sonic is among those who joined in the battle against the menacing Xorda aliens. Despite learning from Sally's handheld computer NICOLE that he would die in the attempt, Sonic speeds towards the deadly Quantum Dial in order to destroy it.. Instead of dying, however, Sonic finds himself hurtled to the other side of the galaxy. It takes him six weeks and several battles to make it back home. Upon arriving, he finds that a great deal has changed in his absence, due to a full year having passed back on Mobius. The Eggman Empire and the Kingdom of Acorn are locked in a state of open war, his home village of Knothole has grown into a thriving metropolis, and a number of other circumstances have changed radically.

Back from Space

Slowly adjusting to the new Mobius, Sonic finds himself facing a number of new difficulties. Old foes such as Mammoth Mogul and Ixis Naugus, together with their Destructix minions, arise to threaten Sonic and his friends as a group. Sonic is also forced to deal with new enemies, including the sentient computer virus A.D.A.M. and the Dark Legion renegade Dr. Finitevus. Battling the former involves a clash over every Chaos Emerald in the universe, which results in the gems being sent to the Zone of Silence. Finitevus' schemes cause Sonic to repeatedly clash with his Anti-Mobius counterpart Scourge the Hedgehog and with other enemies under his banner. Moreover, Finitevus' plans include restoring power to Dimitri, Knuckles' most formidable adversary and the ex-leader of the Dark Legion (which has been wracked by infighting between separate factions under Lien-Da and an Echidna who appears to be her nephew Remington).

During a mission that took him back to the Bem homeworld of Argentium, Sonic also became one of the first to learn of the threat posed to Mobius by Black Doom and the Black Arms. More information concerning the alien menace is revealed to Sonic during a brief teamup with his rival Shadow the Hedgehog. After being defeated and captured by one of Eggman's Metal Sonic models, Sonic is briefly placed under the Doctor's control with a device planted in his ear, which was later destroyed during a battle with Knuckles. Sonic was among those involved in a sting operation that resulted in the capture of several villainous fugitives, including Mammoth Mogul, Ixis Naugus, Bark the Polarbear, Bean the Dynamite, and Nack the Weasel.

Sonic agreed to be the best man at Bunnie Rabbot and Antoine D'Coolette's wedding, with Sally as the maid of honor. Shortly thereafter, he was caught up in the devastating assault on Knothole by Eggman's Egg Fleet which resulted in the capture of almost all of its denizens. A one-on-one duel between Sonic and an armor-clad Eggman transpired, with Eggman gaining revenge for countless defeats by delivering physical punishment on the hedgehog before departing. The beating didn't seem to affect Sonic's spirit, as Tails, Knuckles, Amy Rose, NICOLE, and himself mounted a successful rescue mission following the battle. Not long afterwards, however, their new home city of New Mobotropolis was torn by a conflict between those who remained loyal to the House of Acorn and those who supported Tails' rebellious father Amadeus-worse, Sonic and Tails found themselves on opposing sides. While attempting to stop Amadeus from breaking out of prison, Sonic was attacked by Tails, which degenerated into an all out brawl between them. Sonic tried to resolve the situation by expressing his condolences about Amadeus' arrest, but botched it by claiming that the Prowers had to be stopped. Tails immediately became furious, and vented his anger by berating Sonic for never listening to him. After they vented more anger, Tails revealed his main reason for being angry: Sonic's relationship with Fiona. Sonic then apologized, and the two old friends reconciled. Better still, Sally's timely intervention in a duel between Amadeus and her brother Elias Acorn ended the disputes with a new concept: a ruling council in which the king served as one of seven councilors, the other six chosen through election by the people.

A New Enemy: Enerjak

Not long after his battle with Tails, Sonic would find himself faced with a reborn version of Knuckles' old arch-nemesis Enerjak, news of whom was brought to Knothole after the council races began by none other than the original Enerjak, Dimitri the Echidna. The new council-composed of Tails' mother Rosemary, Rotor the Walrus, and three other Freedom Fighters-put Sally in charge of the Freedom Fighters, and she and Sonic worked together to stop the Chaotix from leaving New Mobotropolis to go to Angel Island in search of Knuckles, who had left for the island earlier. As a compromise, the Chaotix agreed to stay in the city while Sonic and Tails went to look for Knuckles.Sally is able to communicate with Rouge the bat, and she tessls Sally that she will send there newest gun agent. Sonic and Tails arrived on the island, but their search turned up nothing and Enerjak teleported away before they could engage him. The duo then headed back to New Mobotropolis to intercept him, unaware that their missing friend had become their newest enemy.

Upon the duo's return to New Mobotropolis, Sonic used a surprise attack to save Julie Su from Enerjak, he was trying to "liberate" her of her mechanical parts. From there, his battle against Enerjak left him hopeless to match Enerjak's raw power that is until Shadow, GUN's newest agent, arrived and took over. Shadow matched Enerjak for a short time before tiring from his use of Chaos energy. Sonic and the rest of New Mobotrpolis's inhabitants took up the fight even after Enerjak was revealed to Sonic to be Knuckles, but Enerjak easily stopped them with his Chaos powers. It was then they were rescued by Dr. Robotnik, who teleported Enerjak away to his Egg Grapes. When Sonic asks Sally the plan to rescue Knuckles, she hesitates, saying it would also mean unleashing the burden of Enerjak on the world again. To add to Sonic's already shocked state, he and Julie-Su were pulled through a Warp Ring by Knuckles' own father Locke, who sought their help in retrieving a weapon created by the Brotherhood of Guardians-a weapon with the purpose of [...] Enerjak, and by extension Knuckles.

In order to get the weapon, Sonic and Julie-Su were forced to fight the Destructix, and it was only the interference of Knuckles' mentor Archimedes that saved the trio from defeat. Despite his knowledge of the threat posed by Enerjak, Sonic then surprised the Destructix and Locke alike by destroying the weapon, refusing to participate in his friend's execution. With that mission taken care of, Sonic went to face Enerjak, who had returned after tearing through New Megaopolis. Interrupting Dr. Finitevus in his efforts to recharge Enerjak, Sonic absorbed some of the Master Emerald's power into himself, neutralizing Finitevus' brainwashing spell as he became Super Sonic-to the apparent delight of Finitevus.

Possible Futures

[[Image:Mobius 25yrs.JPG|left|thumb|150px|Mobius: 25 Years Later]] The comics have revealed a number of possible futures that exist for Sonic and his fellow Freedom Fighters. In one such future, he joined a classic superhero-themed version of Freedom Fighters, which featured Sonic dressed in a costume based on Vance Astro, a character fromThe New WarriorsandThe Avengers''; this reality was based on Guardians of the Galaxy, as noted by the fact that Sonic's team are the Freedom Fighters of the Galaxy. This Sonic had been launched from Mobius just before a cataclysmic war that left the planet uninhabitable, and spent 1000 years in stasis flying through space before finally returning home. Once there, he found that all his fellow Freedom Fighters had fled to other planets, and their descendants had formed a new group called the Freedom Fighters of the Galaxy. Joining the group, he took the name Sonik and helped them battle the menace of Robolactus, a Galactus based descendant of Dr. Robotnik.

In the possible future timeline Mobius: 25 Years Later, Sonic is the King of Mobius and is married to Sally with two children named Sonia and Manic. The future Sonic has undergone a drastic change, no longer speaking with his old friends. He is increasingly aloof, and doubts his abilities as King.

Abuse of time travel resulted in history being rewritten, with Sonic has being replaced as King by Shadow the Hedgehog, who is now married to Sally. The Sonic of the future is found living on the streets of Portal, Angel Island by Tails and Lara-Su. The three are shortly imprisoned, and must convince Knuckles (an enforcer working for Shadow) to set them free. Sonic attempts to engage Shadow in combat, but is beaten by Shadow's ability to wield Chaos Control. Knuckles' daughter Lara-Su is able to subdue Shadow using nearly identical chaos powers to those of Shadow. Once Sonic recovers, he and Sally agree to a relationship with Sonic retaking his role as king, Sonic even asking Sally about the possibility of having children.

Similar in nature to the original Mobius: 25 Years Later are a number of futures where Sonic and Sally are married as King and Queen. They have two children, possibly Sonia and Manic, and in one of these futures the two youngsters are possessed of super speed. One of these possible realities is the home time of NICOLE, while another was where Robotnik Prime was sent by E.V.E. and from which Robo-Robotnik, later known as Dr. Eggman, hails. In the latter, Robo-Robotnik eventually destroyed the royal family of his reality, including Sonic and

Abilities

Most of Sonic's abilities are in keeping with his video game counterpart, including his super-speed. Notably, while this version of Sonic was adventuring in outer space, he was implanted with a device allowing him to understand all languages (including those of 'regular' animals). As with the games, the cause of Sonic's super-speed is not addressed to a specific degree; He is shown to have been imbued with speed since birth in the comic.

His speed allows him to perform impressive feats, such as vibrating at high speeds to such a degree that it allows him to pass through solid objects, running across a bridge of dirt that he threw into the air, and scooping up a handful of salt water, forming it into a ball and throwing it (in the time of .0000000000001 millisecond). He can also do a powerful slide kick.

His speed also increases his combat abilities. His "figure 8" move (first seen in Sonic CD) increases his speed, strength and allows him to briefly hover in midair. Spinning around in an upright position, Sonic can become a makeshift tornado, taking down any foes close to him. Sonic can achieve similar effects by spinning his arms around, propelling him into the air and defeating anyone caught in his path. In addition to his signature Sonic Spin, which can cut through most things, Sonic can also turn his hands and feet into miniature buzzsaws, although he has only demonstrated this ability a couple of times.

Another ability of Sonic's is the absorption of Power Rings, which he uses to get a boost of energy during battle as well as to facilitate his Super Transformations into such incarnations as Super Sonic, Ultra Sonic, Solar Sonic, Eco Sonic, and Polar Sonic. Following the destruction of Knothole, it is revealed that Sonic has absorbed so many Power Rings that their energy has given him increased healing abilities.

Romance

The Archie comic has the most complex love triangles of all Sonic related media. Love interests within the series include Sally Acorn, Amy Rose, Mina Mongoose, and Fiona Fox.

Sally Acorn

Very early in the comic's run, the stories were composed primarily of slapstick humor much like in AoStH. Sonic literally ran into Princess Sally while trying to break his Uncle Chuck out of Robotropolis (StH #0). Sally, who had lost her father (King Acorn) and was now on the run, convinced Sonic to join the Freedom Fighers. As time goes on, the SatAM story was adapted into the comic and expanded, and Sonic and Sally are rewritten as childhood friends who used to play together in the royal palace. Following the flight from Mobotropolis during Robotnik's coup d'état, they rejoined as teenagers to defeat Robotnik. Sally is established in the cartoon as the leader of the Freedom Fighter resistance. Although Sonic and Sally regularly get on each other's nerves, there are occasional hints that both are merely disguising a crush.

In the comic book series, Sally Acorn is involved in a love triangle between herself, Sonic and Geoffrey St. John, head of her father's secret service. After Sonic secretly steals the Sword of Acorns to try and de-roboticize his father, pressure begins to mount from the Secret Service as they link Sonic to the theft. Geoffrey, now King Elias' advisor, works hard to impress Sally while he is busy antagonizing Sonic; he convinces Elias to take away Sonic's knighthood. During a long period of reconstruction that follows after Robotnik's defeat, Sally is involved with royal duties and cannot make time for her former compatriots. With Bunnie's advice, Sally chooses Sonic to be her royal consort, and one day her husband.

Following an encounter with the Xorda alien invaders, Sonic is lost in space for a year; Sally assumes, along with the world, that he is dead. When Sonic returns from space after a month a half-due to the Theory of Relativity-Sally decides that she cannot bear losing him again, and tries to convince him to give up his heroics. Sally had hoped to groom Sonic as the next King, but Sonic is mortified by the idea. Sally gives Sonic an ultimatum: choose to be at her side, or to be a hero. Sonic declines, and receives a slap in the face in return.

King Max falls ill, poisoned by Patch (an evil version of Antoine from a parallel universe), who has designs on ruling the Kingdom. While in recovery, Max fears for the monarchy and tells Sally that in order to rule in his place, she must marry Antoine. Sally agrees, unaware that the Antoine has been replaced by his evil double. Before Patch can ascend the throne with Sally as his Queen, Prince Elias steps in and retakes the throne. A desperate Patch tries to [...] Elias, but is interrupted by Sonic, who sends Patch back to his reality. Later, at Antoine and Bunnie's wedding, when the subject of marriage comes up, Sally flatly remarks she's perfectly happy remaining single, "thank you very much."

Amy Rose

Early in the comic's run, Amy Rose debuted during in the Sonic CD story adaptation as a maniacal fan of Sonic who sent letters to him. She also started a Sonic fanclub and was a vocal protester at his trial (when Sally ordered his arrest). Fed up with being overlooked as just a "kid", Amy takes matters into her own hands and misuses the power of the Ring of Acorns to age herself to a teenager. While this does little to attract Sonic's attention, it is enough for Amy to gain recruitment into the Freedom Fighters.

Mina Mongoose

Mina comes into the picture in Sonic the Hedgehog #76 as a girl who was mourning the loss of her mother, who roboticized by Eggman. When his Uncle Chuck is reduced to a robot slave again, Sonic recklessly steals the Sword of Acorns to restore his Uncle Chuck's free will. Along the way, he runs into Mina, who lectures Sonic about stealing the sword. They are ambushed by Eggman's Combots, and during the attack, Sonic loses the sword in order to save Mina. Feeling grateful to him for saving her life, Mina provides an alibi for Sonic when the King's secret service starts to suspect him for the theft. When Mina musters the courage to kiss Sonic, she is turned away by his fear of commitment. Meanwhile, Sally, who was locked away within the palace for a while, finally decides to make an exit to see Sonic again. Posing as a servant girl, she exits the palace, and sees the kiss between Mina and Sonic.

While Sally is absorbed by her work, Mina joins the Freedom Fighters to be closer to Sonic. But on her first mission alone, she realizes that she isn't using any of the skills she had been had taught, because she only cared about being near Sonic. She promptly quits the Freedom Fighters, due to lack of genuine motivation to fight (since then she has worked as the tactician of the Sonic Angels team). Feeling down, Mina takes a bath and starts singing. This gets Sonic's attention, and he arranges for her first live performance onstage.

Before Mina can ask Sonic out on a date, Sally is kidnapped by a vengeful fugitive named Nack the Weasel. When Sonic rescues Sally, Mina walks in on the two of them renewing their love to each other with a kiss. Nack reappears and fires his gun at Sally, and Mina suddenly leaps in the path of the bullet; She is rushed to the hospital and survives.

After Sonic's unexpected adventure in outer space (which strands him away from Mobius for a year), he returns home to find that his friends and family have all accepted his apparent death. Like Sally, Mina had also moved on while Sonic was away, and is dating her record manager, Ash. Although Mina briefly juggles her feelings for Sonic when he returns, she is quickly forced to reconcile with Ash when he is injured by a bomb while trying to protect her.

Bunnie Rabbot

While Bunnie has shown interest in Sonic since her debut in the third issue - when he rescued her from a roboticizer - these flirtations have been rare, in part because Bunnie is best friends with Princess Sally. Bunnie does makes advances on Sonic during "Rabbit Deployment", but later ends up with Antoine instead.

Bunnie and Antoine abruptly break up when he starts exhibiting unusually cruel behavior. In reality, this is Patch, an evil version of Antoine from a parallel universe who has managed to switch places with him. While she is on the rebound, Bunnie is approached by another evil clone, Evil Sonic, who tries to seduce her until until Tails stumbles upon both of them and loudly protests. Although Bunnie is put off by Evil Sonic's half-baked come-ons at first, she eventually start to play along, in hoped that it will drive Antoine insanely jealous. In the anti-universe, Anti-Bunnie is among Evil Sonic's long list of girlfriends in that reality.

When A.D.A.M.'s nanites try to integrate Bunnie's robotic limbs into their systems, a quick-thinking Sonic convince the machines that her "organic" half makes Bunnie unfit for their purposes. Once released, Bunnie plants a kiss on an equally-relieved Sonic.

Fiona Fox

Fiona originally did not like Sonic at first, viewing him as selfish for leaving her behind in one of Robotnik's prisons. Her perception Sonic changes after he supposedly 'dies' to protect Mobius from a Xorda alien attack. Fiona's interest in Sonic irritates Tails, who harbors a secret love for her. Eventually Tails musters the will to confront Sonic and Fiona about his feelings, but Fiona rejects Tails because of their age difference.

Sonic and Fiona are sweethearts until Fiona reveals her true nature; she is simultaneously dating Sonic's evil double Scourge, and has defected from the Freedom Fighters to become a villainess. Fiona had fallen in love with Scourge while he briefly impersonated the real Sonic.

Alternate Selves

Sonic's alternate selves have made numerous appearances over the years. The first of these was Sonugh the Boghog, a prehistoric Sonic who lived in the Mobian age of dinosaurs-Boghog stems from the fact that there were no hedges back then, just volcanos and bogs. More prominent was a cybernetic version of Sonic that arrived from a parallel universe to enlist the help of his non-robotic counterpart . In Cyber-Sonic's world, an alternate version of Robotnik had triumphed over the Freedom Fighters and taken over Mobius. But when it came time to assimilate his opponents into robots, Robotnik subjected the Freedom Fighters to partial Robotization, leaving them half-organic, half-mechanical beings that resemble the T-800 from the Terminator films. Super-powerful but still sentient, the Freedom Fighters attacked Robotropolis, but were annihilated when Robotnik turned his own Roboticizer on himself. The lone survivor, Cyber-Sonic, fled to Sonic's reality to warn him that Robo-Robotnik's reach was expanding beyond the limits of his own dimension. Recruiting an army of Sonics from other dimensions, Sonic led the charge against Robo-Robotnik, destroying him along with his weapon, the Giant Borg. Afterward, Sonic found Robo-Robotnik's severed head, but Cyber-Sonic raced by and snatched it from him before disappearing into another portal. If this version of Robo-Robotnik is the same who later returned to Mobius and became Dr. Eggman following Robotnik Prime's demise, it can be assumed that Cyber-Sonic perished.

Evil Sonic/Scourge the Hedgehog is the exact opposite of Sonic the Hedgehog. Coming from Anti-Mobius, Evil Sonic led a team composed of evil versions of the Freedom Fighters called the Anti-Freedom Fighters, all of them sharing names with their good counterparts with the addition of either Anti- or Evil. In his dimension, Evil Sonic terrorizes with an iron fist, his only opposition being the kindly Dr. Kintobor and the pacifistic Anti-Knuckles. Clad in shades, a biker jacket and black boots, Evil Sonic still retains his super-speed abilities and physical appearance. Later on in time, Evil Sonic undergoes an appearance change in an attempt to drain the Master Emerald. Now his fur is green, eyes changes to icy blue, and the addition of flames to his jacket and red frames to his shades. He also becomes so powerful that even with the combined efforts of Sonic and Shadow, they were only able to tire him.

Zonic the Zone Cop

Zonic from Super Special #8

After this experience, Sonic started getting enlisted by a recurring character (another clone of himself) named Zonic the Hedgehog, to right wrongs in other dimensions. While visiting these other "zones", Sonic joined forces with the Sonic Underground Freedom Fighters, including yet another alternate self (presumably Sonic Underground) and that Sonic's siblings Sonia and Manic the Hedgehogs.

Zonic is different from other Sonics in that he exists outside the normal stream of space and time. An alternate version of Sonic from the No Zone, he stands horizontally in Sonic's world as a result of different laws in their realities. Like Sonic, Zonic is a hero, a "Zone Cop" who polices the multiple realities for signs of trouble. He has appeared to Sonic several times to request his help, and has also called upon Tails. Zonic is also the one who revealed to Sonic the fact that Sonic is Sonic Prime, the one Sonic destined to save all dimensions. His primary objectives have included recording the actions of Scourge and preparing Tails for his eventual battle against the all powerful Master Mogul. Presumably, Zonic was afterwards preoccupied by efforts to reestablish order in the wake of the destruction of countless parallel universes-which, no doubt, brought about the deaths of many of Sonic's other selves.

Nominal Problems

Sonic's parents have a habit of calling their son by his real name, and for Sonic, this poses a problem. In an older issue featuring a meeting between Knuckles and Julie-Su with Jules, Sonic's father, Jules called out his actual name, Maurice. At first no one knew who Jules was talking to, except Sonic, who was completely humiliated. Jules clarified that Maurice is only Sonic's middle name, and was about to reveal his first, but Sonic apparently thought this name was even worse and protested, "My name is Sonic, PERIOD!"

The comic occasionally implies that "Sonic" is just a nickname. According to former writer Ken Penders, Sonic's true first name in the comic's continuity is Olgilvie, and he was named after both his grandfathers according to his official bio in issue #112. However, this was never mentioned in any story and is not considered canon. Current writer Ian Flynn has stated that he won't be revisiting the topic and is content with simply calling the hero "Sonic." In any case, his middle name has been stated as Maurice, and his actual last name is Hedgehog.
