Sojuzpatent

Sojuzpatent is a Russian law firm specializing in the protection of intellectual property. It is the oldest intellectual property law firm in Russia and the former USSR. Organized in 1922 under the auspices of the national Chamber of Commerce, for 70 years Sojuzpatent remained the only organization in the Soviet Union authorized to deal with foreigners in the field of intellectual property protection. After the disintegration of the USSR, the company became a limited liability partnership owned by the company’s attorneys. Sojuzpatent lost the monopoly, but it retained major clients and a notable share of the market in Russia, the C.I.S., the Eurasian Economic Community, and the Baltic States.

Soyuzpatent has offices in Moscow, Astrakhan, Vologda, Kirov, Kostroma, and Novosibirsk; it is the headquarters of the national group of the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI) since its foundation in 1965.

The Chambers and Partners legal directory has rated Sojuzpatent as a top tier Russian law firm in the sphere of patent filing.

Notable cases

• 2011: Ferrero Group (Italy) vs. RosFrost – infringement of the trademark “Raffaello” by the Russian ice cream producer. Arbitration Court ruled to destroy counterfeit packages of ice cream and obliged the Defendant to pay compensation.
• 2011: Seiko Epson Corporation (Japan) vs. Iks-Technology – violation of the exclusive rights for the trademark “EPSON.” Arbitration Court obliged the Defendant to stop the violation of the Plaintiff’s exclusive rights, destroy the goods, and pay compensation to the Plaintiff. <>
• 2010: Bausch & Lomb Incorporated (USA) vs. Fitora and INAT-Pharma – prohibition of the Defendants’ use of the designations “ОКОВИТ” and “OKOvit” because of the similarity and confusion with the Plaintiff’s trademark “OCUVITE.” Arbitration Court awarded the Plaintiff damages for the infringement of the exclusive rights and ruled to destroy the marked goods.
