GamePlay
- Public Mod:
SoccerJam consists of 2 teams battling it out to be the first to score 15 goals. When you enter a server, you begin with zero upgrades. You gain experience through different efforts to upgrade your character into a stronger, better, Soccer player. You can knife your opponents dead, score a goal from INCredible distances, steal the ball, assist teammates for goals, or be a goalie, and gain yourself the experience to advance your character. An interesting aspect of SoccerJam is the presence of an alien floating above each goal, who zaps opposing players with a laser for a bit of damage. However, if a player has the ball and attempts to get too close to the opponent's goal, the laser will instantly kill that player instead of just doing a small amount of damage.
Controls are incredibly easy to learn. All keys used are default Half-Life keys. When in-game, type "/help" and read the simple help display to learn the entire game!

- Tournament Mod:
Although not yet available to the public, certain servers have an alternate version of SoccerJam installed instead of the Public Mod. This is called the Tournament Mod. In this mod, the object is not to get 15 goals, but instead score as many goals as possible in a certain time frame. Tournament Mod time is double the speed of real time, so one minute of SoccerJam is equal to 30 seconds of playing. The number of players allowed and the time is regulated by server administrators. Instead of the Public Mod's use of experience to upgrade skills, players are given 12 credits in the Pre-Game phase to distribute among the 5 skills. Each level of skill costs one credit to purchase, with the maximum level costing two. Once all players have chosen their desired skills, they must ready up by typing ".ready". If a player changes their mind, they can type ".wait" to wait, or ".reset" to reset their stats \. Once ready, the teams face off until the timer winds down, at which time the Halftime phase begins. Players can purchase more skills in this phase if they've acquired points, either by being goalie, stealing the ball, assisting on goals, or scoring goals. Once more, players must ready up in order to play the second half. If the score is tied after regulation, the teams will enter a shootout consisting of each player on the team starting at midfield and having 15 seconds to score on the opposing goalie. If still tied after the shootout, teams will enter sudden-death overtime with the first team scoring wins the game.
Competitive Play
Many players have formed teams with other users and scrimmage against other teams in Tournament Mod. While a league was attemped at www.nsjleague.com , due to disagreements in the chain of power, it was largely considered a failure.
A second attempt at competitive SoccerJam was initiated by the long time player Courtney "KicKs" Yaeger with the successful attempt in getting SoccerJam accepted in OGL.
