São Paulo Street Fair and Cultural Diversity

Brief History of Street Fairs in São Paulo

The free markets work in São Paulo since the mid-seventeenth century, given the occurrence of a certain formalization for sale in 1687 of "genera of land, vegetable and fish into theTerreiro of Mercy". In the early eighteenth century, note the distinction between some branches of trade: appear the stores or sales, where farms prove (tissues) and non-perishable foodstuffs, and grocery stores, offering vegetables. In the late eighteenth century and early nineteenth century, the fairs-structure is outside the city, in places of landing troops, or an early hillbilly market and the Fair Pilate, in the Field of Light, established by then Governor Melo Castro Mendonca. This first is the existence that most resembles the markets of today. In 1914, the Free Fair was created through the act of Mayor Washington Luiz P. de Souza, not as a new project, but rather as the official recognition of something that already existed, traditionally, in the city of São Paulo. The first official Free Fair held on a trial basis, with the presence of 26 stallholders and took place in Largo General Osório. The second was held in Arouche Square, with 116 stallholders, and the third was in Largo Morais de Barros. In 1915, they had a total of 7 shows, two in Arouche, two in Largo General Osório and other Morais Barros in Largo, Largo São Paulo, at Rua São Domingos. Mayor Antonio Carlos Assumption, through Act No. 625 of 05.28.34, reorganizes the Free Trade and opens the sale of non-food products. Instills the marketer professional ethics, introducing the work they performed notions of hygiene. In 1948, there is an expansion of Free Trade, when Mayor Paul Lauro, by law, determines the installation of at least one weekly market in each sub-district or city neighborhood. In 1953, the marketing of articles of small cottage industry, exclusive of charities is allowed. Through Decree No. 5841, of 04.15.1964 - one of the most detailed and complete elaborated by the Municipality of São Paulo -, the fairs were reorganized, commanding the form of its creation, its dimensions, arrangement of stalls for chronological order and trade branch and dividing them in Officers and Experimental categories. In 1974, Decree No. 11.199 of 08/02/74, states that the Free Trade have supplementary nature of supply. It is determined using special insulated equipment for sale of slaughtered poultry, kids and fish, as well as the use of uniforms by the merchants. From then on, they are structured into molds, and the São Paulo pole "know-how" to other regions of the country generator, which occur at PMSP, aiming at the implementation of similar structures for their functionality, organization and low implementation cost. The Free Trade shows are great sources of employment and horticultural production flow, beyond the traditional trade of fish.

Go Movement For Fair shows how to buy on the streets can improve cities

Why go to a street fair would be better than shopping in a supermarket? OMovimento Go To Fair was created in 2011 with the aim of inspiring people wandered the stalls of a street fair, but it does more than that: it argues about the reasons why this type of trade to improve the relationship between people and the city (and even between people and their own food). It's a part of what can be done to prevent them steadily decrease until there are no more. "The fairs misappropriate public spaces, bring a compelling drive to the streets and squares and are places where in addition to marketing products in general (from foods - fresh produce - even household materials, clothing and accessories) happen exchanges of culture and emotion" it said the project, which is the product of a work of completion of graduation in Architecture and Urbanism at the City Academy in Sao Paulo - and is available in full on the Internet.
