Slidderyford Dolmen

Slidderyford Dolmen (also known as Wateresk Dolmen) is a portal grave in Wateresk townland, near Dundrum, County Down, Northern Ireland. It is situated off the main A2 Dundrum to Newcastle road. It is a Scheduled Historic Monument at grid ref: J3936 3437.

Features

It is a good example of a tripod dolmen with a large granite capstone 3m long by 1m thick, resting on three support-stones, the tallest being 1.8m high and the shorter ones being 1.3m high. The capstone fits very neatly into a concavity in the smaller portal-stone, echoing other megaliths in South Down. The chamber is no longer definable. A fourth stone lies under the capstone but does not support it. One of the main features of this dolmen is the largest of the support stones which seems to be sculptured to hold the capstone, almost as if in the palm of a hand. An early 19th engraving shows another orthostat and possible remains of a cairn. There are now no traces of these extra stones.
