Shōki (InuYasha)

In the manga and anime series, InuYasha, shōkii (瘴気), which is known as miasma in the English version, is a poisonous gas employed by Naraku. It is not so much an attack as it is a boundary. The shōkii is a standing field of purplish gas, toxic in nature, which surrounds any place he wishes to secure. The gas itself has 'slow kill' properties, gradually poisoning anyone entering it within a matter of minutes.

It can also take the more deadly form of a liquid, which melts almost anything it comes in contact with. This, however, does not occur until later in the series, implying that it takes more effort and / or magical power for Naraku to generate shōkii in a liquid state.

In an anime episode, Naraku gives a fake Shikon shard made of this substance to Koga. It is inherently unstable, but still gives him the power of a normal jewel shard, and poisoned Koga after extended usage.

Naraku's shōkii has a single theme song, entitled simply "Shōkii". It is featured on "InuYasha Ongaku Hen Ni".

It is interesting to note that while no creature has yet been encountered in manga or anime which is immune to Naraku's shokii, demons, and even half demons ( in the case of Inuyasha) are much less vulnerable to both its physical and magical effects.

The shokii limits visibility, can restrain motion, causes coughing, burning of the eyes and throat, numbness, and eventually paralysis and death.
