Sher.pa (Company)

Sherpa is an AI-based personal assistant, initially designed for the Spanish-language market. It raised $6.5 million in a Series A round in May 2016.

Many, perhaps most, AI-based products have been released only in English, or developed initially in English and only ported in limited form to other languages. Sherpa is an exception to this trend.

The application has been called a "predictive Personal Assistant".

According to Xabi Uribe- Etxebarria, the founder and CEO:

"Google Now, for instance, has Spanish but in a limited version, and I’ve always said Siri is not competitive with what we are trying to do. We are trying to provide services like news, movie and TV show listings, and sports results that users might like and based on their preferences. We want to know the weather and tell you what to wear.”

In 2015 an updated version, known as "Sherpa Next", using a card-based interface, was launched.

As of May, 2016, Sherpa was available only in Spain, free of ads and subscription charges. The company plans to expand service to other areas and languages, possibly with an ad-based business model.

Critical response

John Brandon wrote of an early beta version of Sherpa: "If you're looking for a Siri-like alternative on Android, this app will do the trick."
