ShellsNet
ShellsNet is a community and resource Web site for shell providers, their administrators, and users. According to their Wiki 1, ShellsNet exists to promote co-operation, information sharing, and mutual assistance between shell providers. ShellsNet is a non-commercial entity which is run by a volunteer staff drawn from the owners and administrators of various shell account providers and ISPs. The domain seems to have lapsed and ShellsNet is no longer available.
History
ShellsNet was founded at the beginning of May, 2004, by Ashen of MLG with the help of two other system administrators, Wolf from The Forest and Giga of RuleX, to address a need they perceived for an online community that caters to UNIX shell providers.
Many providers have requested ShellsNet affiliation in the past, but have been rejected because they did not meet the requirements. Some providers which are not permitted association with ShellsNet have even been banned from its IRC network entirely because of their policies.
Affiliation Requirements
Administrators of providers who wish to join the group must meet fairly tough requirements in order to become affiliated. This is harder to do than it would seem, because ShellsNet has a Small number of policies which require 'best practice' of affiliated providers. For example, it currently requires that providers do not provide DNS spam hostnames to their users, and run the identd daemon so that the ShellsNet IRC network, amongst others, can distinguish between users on that server. Not all providers are willing to comply with these requirements, which the group sees as necessary to uphold their ethical standards.
