Sharam Kohan

Sharam Kohan () is an Iranian lawyer, philosopher, mathematical logician, and author.

Education and Awards

At the age of ten, due to extreme poverty, Kohan was forced to leave school and work in a restaurant. He taught himself all school subjects and took the annual exams administered by the Department Of Education. At the age of 17, he won his first gold medal in the National Mathematics Olympiad.

Kohan graduated from the University of Tehran with a Bachelor of Science in Pure Mathematics, Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy, Master of Science in Pure Mathematics, Minor in Philosophy, and a Bachelor of Laws (first professional law degree) .

Kohan won a gold medal at the pre-college Iran’s National Mathematical Olympiad and another gold medal at the National Mathematical Olympiad for University Students. In 2003, the President of Iran, Mohammad Khatami honored Kohan with a Distinction Award. In 1997, 1999 and 2003, the President of University of Tehran recognized Kohan’s exceptional academic performances with Exceptional Talent Awards. In August 2012, Kohan won the 2012's Defender of Human Rights Award.

Career

After graduating from law school, Kohan served as a law clerk for Chief Justice Grand Ayatollah Shahroudi on Supreme Court of the Judiciary for one year. From 2004 to 2005, he served in the President Khatami administration as an assistant counsel to the President of Iran. In 2005, Kohan was hired as an assistant professor of law by the University of Judicial Sciences. In 2008, he was promoted to full professor of law. He is the first Jewish law professor in Iran. In 2009, Kohan begun serving as a senior legal researcher for the Research Center of the Iran’s Parliament.
