When undertaking an investigation, the meticulous Guards, with an eye on data and forensics, sometimes are odds with the Jedi, whose methods and insights are less tangible. When Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) becomes chancellor, he phases out the senate guards in preference for his own Royal Guards.

Concept and development

Lucasfilm concept artist Jay Shuster based the Senate Guards' appearance in The Phantom Menace is based on the Royal Guards in Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi. Shuster humanized the Guards by exposing their FACES and gave them a plume for a classical appearance. Costume prop supervisor Ivo Coveney removed the plume and added a visor to the Guards' helmet for Revenge of the Sith.
