Personal life
Dr. Scott Noren is an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon practicing in Ithaca, NY. He was born to Miriam and Seymour Nornen, in Park Ridge, Illinois on April 7, 1960. He is a second generation American with a Ukrainian-Jewish background. Dr. Noren is married to his wife Michelle and has four children; they are ages 12, 13, 14 and 23.
Political Views
Dr. Noren is a fiscally conservative democrat and his two main issues for the senate election being health care and campaign finance reform.
Health Care
Dr. Noren’s primary concern is healthcare. According to his website, Dr. Noren’s view on health care is, “Most New Yorkers and United States citizens do not want the federal government to be overly intrusive in their health care. They want affordable premiums, lower deductibles and providers want to be fairly compensated. The only way to do this is through federally mandated rules for all insurance companies. My plan is not paid for by massive inflationary spending. It is paid for by the insurance companies through forced lower premiums.”
Campaign Finance Reform
Dr. Noren believes that the current campaign finance system should be changed. Senate Committee members' campaign financing should be separate from the committee they are part of. Dr. Noren himself, has stated that he will not take funds from the medical insurance industry and that he hopes to have all his financing be public financing.
The Current Economic Issues (TARP)
Dr. Noren feels that the role of Federal government should not be to decide which companies should survive and which ones should go under; nevertheless, he feels that future banking and financial rules need to stipulate that the bundling of financial instruments should never be allowed to be repeated in the way they were done that led to the mortgage meltdown. This needs to be in writing and clearly prohibited. Dr. Noren feels that instead of the current common manufacturing models, we need to downsize the personnel in future manufacturing plants, keeping wages competitive and increase the use of robotics so that we can compete in the global economy better and more efficiently. Former auto workers might be ideal for re-training in these robotically run manufacturing sectors.
Gun Ownership
Dr. Noren grew up in Morton Grove, Illinois, the first municipality in the US to pass a gun control law. He grew up hunting pheasant occasionally, but as an adult has given up hunting for personal and religious reasons. He is pro-gun but does believe in limited gun control measures and better enforcement of existing laws.
Tax Policy
Dr. Noren is open to a flat tax of around 17% like the Steve Forbes model; his father is a retired accountant; Dr. Noren believes the tax code has become far too complex and needs simplification and reform.
Gay Rights and Marriage
Dr. Noren’s views on Gay marriage are moderately liberal; he believes in upholding the rights of all citizen’s including a gay couple’s rights to have medical proxy and all other voluntary rights such as wills, property agreements, etc. Dr. Noren however, feels that each State should have the right to allow or prevent civil ceremonies voted on by the public.
Immigration
Dr. Noren feels that immigration should be based on a legally grounded policy and that illegal immigration poses social, fiscal and national security dangers. Helping restore Mexico’s economy after we restore our own will help slow down the tendency for Mexican citizen’s to abandon their own country and birthplace.
Abortion
Dr. Noren is Pro-choice; his own religious beliefs are mixed on this issue and follow Jewish law. He feels personally in the cases of [...] and risk of life to a mother that abortion is morally and ethically permissible.
