Sconnie

Sconnie is an affectionate term used in reference to people from the State of Wisconsin. It's used most frequently at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where social differences between in-state students and out-of-state have stimulated the creation of labels such as "Sconnies" and "Coasties." (Coastie is a term which refers to students from the East and West coasts.) However, while "Coastie" GeneRally has negative connotations associated with more affluent and at times even arrogant East Coast culture, as well as the uniformity of clothing worn by East Coast girls, Sconnie is considered a term of endearment that describes the stereotypically friendly, though perhaps slightly provincial mid-westerner. The term is still largely unfamiliar in most of Wisconsin and is generally used only in a humorous context. Nevertheless the term has been successfully marketed on clothing and other merchandise. It has also received the attention of linguists, journalists, and bloggers, many of them Wisconsin natives trying to understand the significance of The New word.
