After Sarah participated in the 2013 Queen of the Universe Pageant as Miss Egypt she came under sharp attack by many Egyptians claiming that she did not deserve this title because of her American Military Veteran status (four years in the U.S. Navy) as well as rumors stating she had claimed to be Miss Egypt of the official Miss Egypt pageant. As a result she became the first social media viral sensation in Egypt and in December 2013 she appeared in numerous magazine and newspaper articles and appeared on many well-known talk shows because of the immense controversy In addressing the rumors Fasha publicly clarified that she never claimed this title on behalf of Egypt's official pageant, adding that Egypt did not even hold a Miss Egypt Pageant in 2013. She said she had stated from the beginning that she was Miss Egypt from the Queen of the Universe Pageant in Beverly Hills, California, in the United States.
Additionally, as Egypt was facing mounting unrest, she was quoted saying as Miss Egypt she wanted to be a voice for Egyptian women and children and for other countries around the world. Her statement added to the viral backlash and she was criticized not only for having served in the U.S. military (even accompanied by photos of her while in the service); accused of not being beautiful enough for a beauty pageant and that she was not “Egyptian enough,” and was even scolded for her rising fame as having “hijacked” Egypt. She took the backlash in stride and responded to some of the criticism: “Beauty pageants aren’t just about beauty, they are also about morals, ethics, accomplishments and more.” Also criticized for modeling in bikinis and revealing attire, she posted a photo of herself in a turtleneck jumper suit.
