Salsamenteria Tomba

Salsamenteria Tomba (Tomba Delicatessen) is a historic delicatessen in Forlì

The word "salsamenteria" comes from "salsamentieri" referring to those who prepared the mix of spices meant to preserve cured meats. In Monografia Statistica, Economica, Amministrativa della Provincia di Forlì (Statistic, economic and administrative report of the Forlì Province) for the year 1866 the "salsamenterie" are cited among the manifold industries existing in town: renown for their quality, pork sausages manufactured in Forlì were exported as far as Florence and Rome.

The store's interiors preserve their atmosphere of a delicatessen of the fifties, and the salami, stricltly sliced with a bare knife, are still hand-crafted and locally manufactured.

History

Situated at the corner between Corso Diaz and Via Bella, next to the Palazzo delle Vacche, the store was first opened in 1905 in Carpinello, a "frazione" of Forlì. In 1917 the activity was enlarged and moved to Via delle Torri. Destroyed in 1944 during a bombing, it was reopened in 1946 in the present location.

The store is still managed by a family member who is the great grandson of the first founder.
