Sabby Jey
Sabina Jeyasingham (born 17 November 1993), professionally known as Sabby Jey, is a former New Zealand–Sri Lankan Tamil model and actress. She appeared on The Bachelor New Zealand (2021) and TVNZ 2 reality show, The Ex Best Thing (2022).
In India, she featured in the Tamil-language film, Karthikeyanum Kaanamal Pona Kadhaliyum. She has also worked on modelling campaigns in New Zealand and India.
Early life and education
Jey was born in Auckland, New Zealand to Sri Lankan parents who were refugees. She holds a Bachelor of Business degree from Auckland University of Technology (AUT), and is fluent in English and Tamil.
Career
Jey began working in modelling at university level across New Zealand and India. The Times of India in 2017 reported that she had acted in a commercial film by the duo J. D.–Jerry and that she had signed up for the Tamil movie Kaadhal Nagaram, which was renamed Karthikeyanum Kaanamal Pona Kadhaliyum. In January 2019, Viva (NZ Herald fashion magazine) showcased a Maybelline New York campaign, where Jeyasingham became part of an expanded range of colors project.
Jey featured as a bachelorette on The Bachelor New Zealand (2021) in New Zealand television. The broadcaster's cast list and local magazine reviews featured her as one of the season's contestants. She featured in 2022 as one of the stars of TVNZ 2 reality dating show The Ex Best Thing. Local coverage and episode listings of the show identify Jey and her ex-partner “Ku” as a featured couple.
Aside from entertainment work, Jey has been associated in New Zealand media with promoting inclusivity and colourism consciousness. Indian Newslink featured her as the Model of the Fortnight in 2018 for the Dark Is Beautiful campaign. The same newspaper covered her role as brand ambassador in 2018.
Personal life
Jey spoke about getting cosmetic surgery in a 1News interview on youth cosmetic-surgery trends in New Zealand. She has also spoken to Woman's Day/Now To Love about recovery from a car accident and about being [...] assaulted and having PTSD. In 2022, she participated in a public rally in Auckland calling for compulsory consent education; her remarks at the event were covered by Re:News.
