Robert Carey, CFA
Robert (Bob) Carey (born, 1963) is a well-known American investment manager and equity analyst.
With over 20 years of experience as an equity market and fixed-income analyst, Bob Carey has become one of America’s most trusted financial advisors. He is quoted regularly in the Wall Street Journal, Fortune Magazine, Business Week, and Bloomberg News. In addition, he is a regular guest on business television programs such as CNBC, Bloomberg TV, Business News Network (Canada) as well as radio stations throughout the United States.
Carey is a recipient of the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation and holds a B.S. in Physics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He began his professional career with Robert B. Ausdal & Co. Inc. before taking a position at Callard, Madden & Associates- an investment research and consulting firm. He is now the Chief Investment Officer at First Trust Advisors L.P., a financial services firm headquartered in Lisle, Illinois.
Carey is a member of the CFA Society of Chicago and the CFA Institute.
Personal Life and Early Career
Bob Carey was born in blue-collar Western New York in 1963. At a young age his family moved to Boston, Massachusetts, where he spent the majority of his childhood and adolescent years. In 1980, he moved to Illinois where he attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. At the University of Illinois, Carey studied physics, a field which fostered his aptitude for the quantitative disciplines and mathematical analysis. After receiving his B.S. in Physics in 1985, Carey entered the world of finance and earned the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation in 1996.
Emphasis on Quantitative Analysis
As a financial analyst, Carey has always placed a strong emphasis on quantitative analysis and mathematics, reflecting his academic background in the hard sciences. Since the inception of his financial career, he has implemented proven, quantitative and mechanical investment management techniques, removing the emotion from the investment process.
Discounted Cash Flow Theory
Throughout his career in financial services, Carey has been a strong advocate of the discounted cash flow method of financial modeling. He has been an industry leader in discounted cash flow analysis and continues to implement this trusted method in financial management decisions.
Carey as Chief Investment Officer
Carey currently serves as Chief Investment Officer (CIO) for First Trust Portfolios L.P., a financial services firm located in Lisle, Illinois. As CIO, Carey oversees the entire investment process, research teams, and operations, implementing his expertise in strictly quantitative investment processes. His highly successful style of quantitative based, emotion-free investing has earned Bob Carey a solid reputation as an important figure in international investing.
