Ritrö Gönpo

Ritrö Gönpo is a Tibetan protector deity that protects mountain retreat participants. Ritro means 'mountain retreats' and Gonpo (mgon po) means 'protector.' Vajra Master Reginald Ray climbed Kit Carson Peak, a fourteener of Crestone, CO in 2005. While there, he encountered the energy of Ritrö Gönpo watching over the valley and its practice activities. Ray returned to retreat and acknowledged this protector during the Dharma Ocean winter dathün nearby.1 Ray symbolically renamed Kit Carson as 'Ritrö Gönpo' to acknowledge this presence. Ray wrote a protector chant that is performed alongside chants for other protectors, and a Thangka and shrine were also created. Participants of dharma retreats have taken pictures of the mountain with this new name and blogged about this energy.2
