Regioclima is a project part-financed by the Interreg IVC Programme, which is part of the European Territorial Cooperation Objective. It is a European Union programme that helps regions of Europe work together to share their knowledge and experience. Launched in 2007, the programme will run until 2013.

The programme provides funding for all regions of Europe plus Switzerland and Norway (regional and local public authorities) to exchange and transfer knowledge and good practice. Two main priorities are targeted: ‘Innovation and Knowledge economy’ and ‘Environment and Risk prevention’. These priorities reflect the strategy of the European Union to encourage growth and jobs in line with the Lisbon and Gothenburg Strategy. INTERREG IVC finances the network element of the European Commission initiative Regions for Economic Change.

Objectives of the project

The overall objective of Regioclima is to assist societies to adapt to the new climate conditions both by minimising the risk of damage and exploiting the new opportunities arising from a changing climate.

To achieve this specific objective, the project action will seek to:

- To emphasise the need to adapt to climate change (awareness raising and understanding of opportunities & threats)

- To support the broad public debate about adaptation strategies opened by the EC (Green Paper & Launch of Public Debate), guiding action within EU and in relation to Regional and Local Authorities.

- To jointly develop the capacities (in terms of knowledge, skilled staff, policy tools and access to EU wide regional cooperation mechanisms) of the participating regional authorities and institutions to facilitate adaptation to climate change.

Regioclima will give special attention to five main themes/sub-objectives:

- Identification of optimal resource allocation and efficient resource use when adapting to a changing climate;

- building of regional alliances and coordination of regional action towards adaptation to climate change;

- reduction of uncertainty and expansion of the knowledge base in adaptation to climate change;

- integration of adaptation into existing and forthcoming legislation & policies;

- elaboration of climate change adaptation strategies.
