Recovery of San Juan de Puerto Rico by Governor Juan de Haro'' (Spanish: La recuperación de la isla de Puerto Rico por el gobernador de la isla, Juan de Haro'') is a painting by Eugenio Cajés from between 1634 and 1635, in the Prado Museum in Madrid.
Description
In the foreground is Juan de Haro and Juan de Amézqueta, and in the background are Spanish troops and ships in the harbor. Cajés who died before finishing the painting; it was compleeted by Antonio Puga and Luis Fernández.
Analysis
The painting was decoration for the Palacio del Buen Retiro "Kingdoms Room" depicting the recovery of the island of San Cristobal.
In 1625, Dutch admiral Boudewijn Hendricksz, with 17 vessels attacked and occupied San Juan de Puerto Rico and beseiged San Felipe fortress, where governor Juan de Haro had sought protection. After 28 days of siege, Admiral Juan de Amezqueeta lifted the siege.
