Reavis Canyon Trail

Reavis Canyon Trail #509/580 is on the southern edge of the Superstition Wilderness east of Phoenix Arizona. The hike is 11.2 miles RT and climbs 2500 feet with an accumulated gain of 2900 feet. The first 3.3 miles only climb 500 feet. The next 2.2 miles climb 2000 feet.

The trail is famous for it's usage in the late 1800's hauling apples and other produce from the orchard at Reavis Ranch down to the mining town of Superior Arizona.

Both trailheads are on FR 650 which requires a high clearance vehicle. 4WD may also be required--especially after a rain.

Sections of the lower portion of FR 650 are in a creek bed with large rocks and soft sand. The lower portion is through an area prone to flash flooding so stay away when rain is in the forecast. After a rain, the sand ramps in and out of the creek bed crossings wash away. There can be two-three foot drops until Quads and off-road vehicles recreate them.

If you're uncomfortable with a one lane dirt road with sharp switchbacks and a 500+ foot drop off, don't attempt driving the upper portion of FR 650. Although it's a one lane road, there is two-way traffic. Most traffic is from west to east. The danger of you having to back up a quarter mile or so are less if you also travel west to east.
