Pulimamidi Rabindra Reddy

Prof. Rabindra Reddy or Rabindra as he is fondly called, with his vast experience in teaching and research both in India and abroad including at Harvard University USA, has made significant contribution to the cause of higher education in the country and in particular Andhra Pradesh. He is a firm believer in the concept that teaching and research should go together with good administration in the Universities, which are training centers for Human Resources, to achieve their mission objectives. His more than 35 years of service in Osmania University is an endeavor in this direction. His contribution in the area of teaching, research and administration has been well recognized.

Prof. Rabindra is well known among the students and teaching community as an innovative teacher. He is an invited speaker for Academic Staff colleges of several universities in India. He is responsible for starting new need based courses in the University. He has played an important role in the design of new curricula both at the state and country level as a member of the UGC panel. As a chairman subject committee of B.I.E, A.P, he was responsible for the rationalization of intermediate syllabi and the design of flawless question paper and blue print models.

He secured his B.Sc. (special) with chemistry major in 1965, M.Sc (Chemistry) in 1967 from Osmania University and Ph.D from Indian Institute of Technology, Madras in 1972. Since then he is associated with Osmania University in various capacities as an Assistant Professor (1972-80), Associate Professor (1980-88) and as a professor (from 1988). He has rich experience of teaching both at under graduate and postgraduate levels. He has held important administrative positions in the University - Head of the Department, Chairman Board of studies, Convener RBS and Director Research Development and Consultancy Cell Osmania University. As a founder director of RDCC, he has initiated meaningful interaction with industry and university and was responsible for changing the curricula both at UG and PG levels to suit the needs of the industry. This has helped the student community to secure jobs in industries as their inputs are outputs of universities. During his tenure several industries and organizations like CPRI have availed the expertise of university teachers to solve their problems. As chairman, Board of Studies and Head of the Department he was responsible for starting new courses for the benefit of rural students.

In spite of being in a state university, where most of the time is devoted to teaching, examination and evaluation, Prof. Rabindra has made notable contribution to research in broad areas of chemistry both in solution and solid-state. His work has become part of chemistry reviews and textbooks. His work is extensively quoted by other research groups throughout the world. He is an invited speaker at several National and International symposia. He was invited by the American Chemical Society to present his work on “DNA recognition by simple metal complexes” in 2001 and 2004 and hydrolytic cleavage of DNA at physiological conditions in 2006 and 2007.

He has played a key role in getting large amounts of funding from government of India agencies through five year plan programs. He has attracted large amount of funding from various agencies for research.

He is also responsible for departmental funding - UGC-COSIST, SAP and DST-FIST programs. He has successfully operated 14 projects funded by UGC, CSIR, DST and Industry. He has guided 23 Ph.D.s and published more than 90 papers in referred journals of International repute. He is editor /author of 2 forth coming books.
