Publius Varrus
Gaius Publius Varrus (a.k.a. Commander Varrus, Publius Varrus, Varrus) is a character in novels written by Jack Whyte. He first appeared in The Skystone, the first book in the Dream of Eagles Cycle (known as the Camulod Chronicles in the USA.
Character history
Publius Varrus was born in Roman Britain, of Roman STOCK.
In early life his father was killed fighting for the Roman Legion, and he was raised by his grandfather, a veteran, and blacksmith.
Varrus joined the the legions as a young man, and was quickly promoted to signifer. It was in this role - while wounded from battle in Africa that he first met Cauis Britannicus. He was later promoted to Centurion, and met Britannicus again during his transfer to Britain.
He fought for years under Cauis Britannicus, and eventually attained the rank of Tribune. Varrus' retirement from the army came early when he was severely wounded in battle, leaving him with a limp.
Publius Varrus retired to Colchester (Camulodunum) the village where he was raised, took over his late grandfather's house, and smithy.
