ProRat (trojan horse)
ProRat is a Microsoft Windows based backdoor trojan horse, more commonly known to the cracker community as a RAT (Remote Administration Tool). As with other trojan horses it uses a client and server. Prorat opens a port on the computer which allows SomeOne connected with the client to perform numerous operations on the server (the machine being controlled). Prorat has a free version available also. In the free version, Prorat cannot connect to users over wireless networks, only over L.A.N (Local Area Network). The official site is called www.prorat.net.
Prorat is a backdoor virus enabling users, most likely skilled hackers, to take almost full control of your computer. Prorat enables them to format your hard disk and, something probably worse, to browse the passwords of your instant messaging clients. Above these vital features, Prorat also has something what the program makers call 'funny stuff'. This feature enables the hackers to hide desktop ICONS or the taskbar. Also they can open and close the infected PC's CD drive, and make the keyboard lights go 'crazy'.
Stealth
Prorat uses many tricks to hide itself including Process hider and auto-melt. It is also possible to bundle Prorat with a rootkit such as HXDef.
Common Uses
Prorat is most commonly used by script kiddies. Prorat can upload pornographic material as well as other things. It can also hide the mouse, kill processes, create a uncloseable chat and format all drives on the server machine. Prorat could also be used as a valid remote administration tool. With the ability to upload, kill processes and spawn new ones, it leaves much power to the person connected.
Removal
Most virus removal tools detect and can remove Prorat. However, it is possible to encrypt and compress the exectuable using a tool such as UPX or Armadillo which would mask it from a virus removal utility then add a rootkit to hide it from the user. In such a case you should see the rootkit article for removal.
