Princeton University Players
The Princeton University Players is a student theater company at Princeton University. It was formed in 1987 and specializes in MusicAL theatre.
General Information
The Princeton University Players, or PUP, was established at Princeton University in 1987 to produce the original musical One Fine Day. Although relatively young, the group has found great success in Princeton, having developed a distinctive voice as a performance group dedicated to the production of established musical theatre--thus complementing the Princeton Triangle Club's original productions and Theatre Intime's non-musical productions. Unlike these two groups, PUP does not use a single performance space. Rather, it performs in a variety of locations, including Matthews Acting Studio, Frist Theater & Performance Center, Richardson Auditorium, the Forbes Blackbox, and the Wilson Blackbox. This allows the group a great deal of versatility in its productions.
Similarly, PUP's actors, musicians, directors, designers, and other members come from a variety of backgrounds and often participate in many other groups on campus, including dance groups, a capella groups, and other theater productions on campus. While many move on to pursue theater after graduation, many others seek careers in other fields, from medicine to physics to history.
Typically, PUP produces three regular season shows, although this number is flexible. Additionally, the group produces a Reunions show in Frist at the end of the season, as well as a revue or other small show to begin the season. Recently, PUP announced its 2007-2008 season, including Camelot (November 2007), The Flood (March 2008), and Clue: The Musical (April 2008).
In the past few years, the PUP Board has expanded considerably and currently consists of 20 members. The Board is subdivided into the Executive and Managing Board.
