Band history

Formation and early activity

Will Vaughan (vocals, guitar and synth), Drew Woolnough (bass guitar and vocals), and brothers William "Saggie" Jones (guitar and vocals) and Dave Jones (drums and vocals) were all students at the Sir John Leman High School in Beccles, Suffolk when they formed the band. On April 3 2005 they played their first gig at a local showcase in Beccles, opening their set with a cover of Spinal Tap's Rock and Roll Creation. Spending much of their early life playing on the Waveney circuit, they self-released the 7-track Plan Nine's 'Plan Nine' EP in 2006 and built up a sturdy local following with their energetic live shows and eccentric stage outfits. It was during this time that chart-topping band Rooster personally picked out Plan Nine to play support to their sold out Norwich Waterfront show in October 2006. The band's popularity soared after receiving heavy press promotion in the area before and after the gig and established the band as one of the most promising new acts to come out of the Eastern music scene.
2007 saw the band perform their own shows at the Norwich Arts Centre and record their first commercial release, The Plan Nine EP, which was recorded in just 5 days at Purple Studios in Norwich. The record was released for download on March 17 2008 on the Ditto Music label; Average Bear Records.
In support of the release, the band returned to the Norwich Waterfront, were interviewed on BBC Radio Norfolk and Radio Norwich, and embarked on their 'UK World Tour of Norwich' over the Summer.
Towards the end of 2008, the band played main support for ex-The Darkness rockers Stone Gods at their Norfolk homecoming and played their first shows in London; headlining the Barfly and Purple Turtle in Camden.

Dave Jones' departure

On 18 February 2009, the band announced through their MySpace blog the departure of long-term drummer Dave Jones. The statement said:
"For many reasons (we'll cite "MusicAL differences" for now), it looks like Plan Nine will no longer be continuing with our friend, brother and drummer; Dave Jones.
For now, as we session some other players, we will continue as an acoustic trio for gig purposes until we find the right person, which will not be an easy task.
We'd like to thank everyone for their support over the years and here's to a bright future."
The new drummer for Plan Nine has been announced as Ben Timewell (formally of HellCat).

Recent and future activity

The band made their debut with the new line-up at their club night Ballet of Teeth at Tommy Flynn's in Camden, London on 19 April 2009. In keeping with the eccentric outfits worn by the band in their early days, singer Will Vaughan revealed his First One-piece catsuit to a packed Camden venue on 17 May 2009.
Through video blogs on the Plan Nine Official Website, and with a new taster up on their MySpace page, the band have confirmed they are working on a new record over the Summer of 2009.
The new line-up is said to have a fresh sound, now incorporating the use of synthesizers and leaning towards funky electro pop rock and away from the sound of their first record. The new EP is expected to be released late 2009.
Recently Music-News.com described Plan Nine as "a band to look out for in 2009".
The band will be performing across London over June which will include shows for Music-News.com and Carling Live.
