Phillips Exeter Academy Crew

Phillips Exeter Academy Crew is a high school rowing program at Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, New Hampshire. Originally recognized as a sport at the Academy in 1864, Exeter Crew is one of the oldest high school rowing programs in the country. The team rows eight-person shells out of the Saltonstall Boathouse on the Squamscott River in the fall and spring, and competes against many other private schools in The Spring.

The Phillips Exeter Crew is a member of The New England Interscholastic Rowing Association and competes every May at the NEIRA Championship Regatta on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Massachusetts. At this regatta, Exeter gained first place for Boys First Fours in 1947, 1952, 1960, 1962 and 1965. After switching to eight-person shells in 1970, Exeter took first place for Boys First Eights in 1973, 1979, 1990, 1993, 1996, 1998, 1999, and 2002. Phillips Exeter has acheieved first place in the Girls First Eights in 1994, 2003, 2004, 2006 and 2007. In 1996, the Exeter boys first boat went on to win first place at the USRowing Youth National Championship in Cincinnati, Ohio.

  • Marshall Newell (1890) - Oarsman and football player at Exeter and Harvard, namesake of Harvard men's boathouse.
  • Lawrence "Chick" Stoddard (1921) - Coxswain at Exeter and 1924 Yale crew that won at the 1924 Olympics in Paris, France.
  • David Wight (1952), Frank Gutmann (1952), John Antholz (1952), Sten Lium (1952) - Oarsmen on the Exeter four that went to trials for the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki Finland.
  • Bob Morey (1954), David Wight (1952), William Becklean (1954) - Oarsmen at Exeter and members of the Yale crew that won gold medals at the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne, Australia.
  • Anne Marden (1976) - Oarswoman at Exeter and silver medalist on the coxed quad at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, California.
  • Jonathan Smith (1979) - Oarsman at Exeter and silver medalist on the straight four at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, California and bronze medalist on the eight at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, South Korea.
  • Andrew Sudduth (1979) - Oarsman at Exeter and Harvard, stroke of the silver medal winning eight at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, California and single sculler at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, South Korea.
  • Sloan DuRoss (1995) - Oarsman at Exeter and on the quadruple sculls at the 2004 Olympics in Sydney, Australia.
  • Michael Blomquist (1999) - Oarsman at Exeter and gold medalist on the eight at the 2005 World Rowing Championships, rowed for a victorious Oxford crew in the 2005 Boat Race against Cambridge.
