Philippe Cadène

Philippe Cadène is a professor of geography at Paris Diderot University, affiliated to the Center for social studies on African, American and Asian worlds (CESSMA). He is renowned for his research on economic development in India.

Biography

Philippe Cadène was born in 1955 in the South of France. He holds a Ph.D. degree from the University of Toulouse II-Le Mirail (1985). His Ph.D. thesis, under the supervision of Professor Bernard Kayser, examined the socio-economic changes in French peri-urban areas. He then continued his research on medium sized towns in India, where he extensively wrote on the emergence of industrial districts. He has since expanded his work on the cities of the Gulf countries, where he analysed the socioeconomic changes in the region. More broadly, he did extensive research on the impact of globalisation on Asian regions, co-authoring an important book and teaching a course on the topic in Sciences Po Paris. All along his career, Philippe Cadène continuously published handbooks and atlases for the general public. He has taught at University of Montpellier III-Paul Valéry, Seoul National University, Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi, University Utara Malaysia, University Kebamgsaan Malaysia, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, and Paris Diderot University.
