Orion (music software)

Orion is a music production suite developed by Synapse Audio Software for Microsoft Windows.

The software supports all stages of music production, from composing/arranging music to mixing and mastering it. It includes multitrack audio recording, generators, effects and a mixing desk with sub busses. It supports both traditional linear sequencing and pattern-based sequencing. Supported external interfaces include VST, DirectX and ReWire. Audio output resolutions range from 16 Bit/44.1 kHz up to 32 Bit/192 kHz, Stereo.

Features

Generators

Orion comes with the following internal generators (as of version 8.02):

Pro-9

The new Pro-9 generator is a complete overhaul of the former XR-909 generator. The Pro-9 offers virtual-analog drum sound modelling of breathtaking quality and accuracy, not only making it indistinguishable from the analog reference hardware, but also providing that analog "feel" which mere sample-based recreations lack. The user interface comprises controls for each drum sound, as well as a classic drum machine step sequencer, for quick and easy pattern programming. There is a total of 11 sounds that can be synthesized, including Bass Drum, Snare, Toms, Clap, Rimshot, Hihats and Cymbals. The Pro-9 is fully compatible with the General MIDI (GM) drum map, so it can be played via MIDI gear as well.

Acoustic Grand

The Acoustic Grand is a sample-based piano sound module introduced in Orion 8. The underlying data has been recorded and painstakenly edited by the well-known sampling company Yellow Tools, in highest stereo 24-bit quality. The user interface offers three controls to shape the sound. The brightness control, which adjusts the velocity-dependent brightness of the piano tone. The release parameter controls how quickly a note fades out, after a key has been released. Needless to say, the sustain pedal is supported as well. Finally, a high-quality chorus effect can be applied to the sound if desired. The lossless compression employed reduces the sample data to less than 40 mb. This means that the piano opens practically immediately, does not need to access harddisk during operation, and uses little memory.

Toxic III

Successor of the Toxic synth. 6-Operator FM Synthesizer with modulation matrix and multiple onboard effect sections, as well as a powerful step sequencer.

Licensed by Maxx Claster, who now works as an external developer for Image-Line. Maxx Claster was not employed by Image-Line when Toxic III was licensed to Synapse Audio.

Toxic II

Despite Toxic III being introduced in v7, Toxic II is still included.

Highly sophisticated FM Synthesizer, capable of great atmospheric pads, string and lead sounds.

Licensed by Maxx Claster, who now works as an external developer for Image-Line. Maxx Claster was not employed by Image-Line when Toxic II was licensed to Synapse Audio.

Tomcat

Versatile drum sound synthesizer - as opposed to the XR-909, the Tomcat was designed for percussive sounds in general, rather than specific drum sounds.

Sampler

Compose with professional multisample patches in popular formats. Load your own WAV files and transform them with filters and modulators.

Ultran

Advanced sample-based morphing synthesizer, capable of highly atmospheric pads and string sounds.

Wasp XT

History
Wasps roots come from a free standalone software-synth, the TS-404. It was coded by Richard Hoffman (who is now the main driving force behind Synapse Audio), and was later licensed to Image-Line Software for FL Studio. The TS-404 was later developed into the first version of Wasp. Wasp was included in early versions Orion and also licensed to Image Line who sold it as an add on plugin for Fruity Loops and as a separate VSTi plugin.
Wasp was continually developed by Synapse Audio / Sonic Syndicate as part of Orion. A major update to Wasp, Wasp XT, was released with the first version of Orion in 2002. Image-Line didn't update their version of Wasp until FL Studio v6 was released in early 2006 (also changing the name to Wasp XT). It is not clear whether the later Image-Line version uses the same code as the Synapse-Audio version.

Drums

Quickly arrange sophisticated drum patterns using your own sampled sounds. Create and store drum kits for easy reuse.

Monobass

Reproduces the classical sound of vintage analogue bass synthesizers - from deep and powerful bass, to squeaky tweaking acid lines.

Emulation of TB-303

XR-909

A virtual drum box, reproducing a selection of classic sounds from vintage analogue gear.

Emulation of Roland TR-909

Wavefusion

Based on digital wavetable transformations, this synthesizer brings you a variety of pads and leads, with plenty of possibilities for modulation.

Screamer

2-Oscillator virtual analog monosynth with overdrive and special accent+slide circuitry.

Plucked String

Physical modelling synthesizer, emulating the behavior of a plucked string instrument.

MIDI Out

Play and control external MIDI gear, or internal MIDI synths via a loopback device.
