Organization of the San Francisco Fire Department

The San Francisco Fire Department in the largest municipal fire department in Northern California and is the third largest in the U.S. state of California after Los Angeles and San Diego. The San Francisco Fire Department is organized in a paramilitary fashion, similar to that of most large municipal fire departments, namely the New York City Fire Department and the Chicago Fire Department.

Operations

Staffing

The staffing of fire companies has varied over the history of the department. Currently, SFFD Engine Companies are staffed by an Officer, two Firefighter/EMT's, and one Firefighter/EMT or Firefighter/Paramedic. Truck Companies are staffed with an Officer, three Firefighters, and one Firefighter/EMT. Rescue Companies are staffed by an Officer, two Firefighter/EMT's, and one Firefighter/Paramedic. The Fireboats, are staffed by an Officer, a Marine Pilot and a Marine Engineer. The Hose Tender Company, located on Treasure Island, is staffed by an Officer and one Firefighter. The Airport Engine Companies are staffed by an Officer, a Firefighter, and a Firefighter/EMT. The Airport Truck Company is staffed by a Firefighter and a Firefighter/EMT. One Airport ARFF Crash Rescue Truck is staffed by an Officer, a Firefighter and a Firefighter/EMT, while the remaining ARFF Crash Rescue Trucks are staffed by a Firefighter and a Firefighter/EMT. All Paramedic Ambulances are staffed by two Paramedics.
