Orbit Skate Center

ORBit Skate Center

  • Orbit Skate Center is a roller rink located in Palatine, IL

History

  • Built in 1972 as the largest roller rink in the Midwest, Orbit Roller Rink has a 200x100 foot rotunda maple floor that was installed by a man named Tilly from Texas who was known for his superior skating floors.
  • During the days of Disco, the rink was filled to capacity. Many people have learned to skate at Orbit Roller Rink including Tara Lipinski who switched to ice skating early on when her teachers and parents saw her
  • The original owners of the rink retired in 1992 and a new family took it over renaming it to Orbit Skate Center and remodeling the entire inside of the building. They painted outer space murals on the end walls that are 40 feet high by 100 feet wide. The main artist was Donald Gill of Glendale Heights, Illinois. Donald Gill also did the logo for Orbit Skate Center in 1992.
