openmamba is a Linux distribution started in 2007, based on QiLinux and focused on velocity and usability of the applications for office, audio, professional video and the Internet.
openmamba release versions are livecd and flash-1GB. The distribution pays particular attention to support audio, in fact it's based on the low latency audio server called jack, and video, supporting ATI and nVidia proprietary drivers and desktop 3D effects thanks to Compiz.
Created and maintained by mambaSoft, the distribution is an open project where the development is based on a community where members can freely register and then add or modify what they want into the distribution.
Name
The name comes from the union of open, to emphasize the Open Source feature and mamba, that comes whether from Black mamba, the female main character of Kill Bill film or from eastern green mamba.
Features
openmamba is based on KDE, that's specifically projected to give a free, simple and user-friendly GUI and in the same time a big range of modern desktop applications. There are inside more than 1.500 applications: OpenOffice, Firefox, GIMP, email clients, programming editors, games and much more.
openmamba started as an evolution of devel-silvan update repository of QiLinux distribution from which was detached when updates stopped getting a name and an own structure.
The distribution is now available in English and Italian.
Supported architectures
The distribution support i686 architectures and compatibles. Porting to x86 64 and ppc architectures are planned.
Distribution types
At the moment the distribution is available in two types:
- livecd: a base openmamba system oriented to desktop in general, office and multimedia, with KDE and a lot of applications, for example OpenOffice, GIMP, Amarok and Firefox. Livecd contains a software to install the system in the computer.
- flash-1GB: a system ready to being installed in a USB device with at least 1 GB of capacity that let user try the system without install anything in the computer, in fact it's possible to install any software user want inside the device, in this case it's recommended a flash with at least 2 GB. For this system is available a CD ISO image called BootCD, that can boot from a USB storage also when computer doesn't support this mode natively.
Releases
Livecd and flash-1GB images are automatically created each week by a software called makedist as a snapshot of the devel repository.
