OpenFrag is an open-source first-person shooter in development. The project is currently working on a rewrite with the code-name Kenny. OpenFrag uses Yake and OGRE 3D as its game and 3D engine.

From the AbOUT page;

OpenFrag was founded in May 2003 and aims to create an open source first person shooter with commercial grade quality. All participants are volunteers and use some of their spare time to help in the development process, as you may understand we need a lot of people to accomplish our goals. Our project uses third party engines that have been chosen with the utmost care and fully meet our demands. We chose not to reinvent the wheel which has caused so many other projects to fail. In fact, the way we work was directly influenced to do things differently by the projects that have already met their demise.

What makes us special is that we won't be enforcing anything on our members, we are all volunteers and want to be treated that way. Someone could ask you nicely if you would like to work on something, and then the choice is up to you. We are a friendly bunch and we like to discuss about everything that is going on in our daily lives, in the end it is all about the fun of creating something and doing it together.

If you have always thought that developing your own game would be nearly impossible then here is the chance to experience it yourself, and have a lot of fun trying. Developing a game model takes us from concept drawing to a fully 3d model and then texturing and animation will have to be applied, a real challenge that requires a lot of energy but is more than rewarding. Coding is needed to add game functionality, sound effects and music have to be created to let the players submerge in the game. So we don't only need a lot of people, we also need them in a lot of different categories.

We cannot promise you that our game will look anything like Half-Life 2 or Doom 3, their development took a paid team multiple years, however we can offer you the experience of developing your own game together with enthusiasts from all around the world. It May Be possible to let your participation in OpenFrag count for additional study points, ask your teachers about this possibility. At the very least you get to know all the aspects that are relevant in the process of creating a fullfledged game. We have been at it for four years and we have had our share of ups and downs but what prevailed is a number of hardcore fanatics that are dedicated to it's success!
