One Economy Corporation

One Economy Corporation is a non-profit, non-partisan organization based in Washington, D.C. that uses technology to fight to poverty. Founded in 2000, One Economy focuses on bringing broadband access to low-income homes, training people in technology, and creating media properties that connect people to information AbOUT money, education, and other important topics. One Economy Corporation has projects around the United States and internationally.

Websites

One Economy’s websites include theBeehive.org, 247townhall, and ZipRoad. Each uses technology to help low-income people access information. Fast Company magazine described the Beehive, One Economy’s signature site, this way:

Organized around six different categories -- money, health, school, jobs, family, and lifestyle -- the Beehive provides basic but important information. According to [One Economy CEO Rey] Ramsey, the thinking behind the site is as straightforward as the site itself. "People with low incomes are often socially and economically isolated," he says. "They don't have access to the same tools, information, and networks that a lot of us take for granted. Answers to questions such as 'How do I write a check?' and 'Why do I need health insurance?' aren't obvious. If you're not around people who have insurance, how do you know?"

Leadership

Rey Ramsey, One Economy’s Chairman and CEO, is a co-author of ManagingNonprofits.org: Dynamic Management for the Digital Age (ISBN 978-0471395270). In 2003, Ramsey was elected chairman of the Habitat for Humanity International Board.

Alec Ross, One Economy’s executive vice president for external affairs and co-founder, heads the organization’s business development and public policy efforts, which included the Bring IT Home campaign—an effort which changed housing finance policy in 42 states.
