North American Model United Nations (NAMUN)
Established in 1985 at the University of Toronto and York University, the North American Model United Nations (NAMUN) is Canada’s pre-eminent university level MUN and draws delegations from around the world.
The inaugural address was given on 13 February 1986 by his Excellency, then Canadian Ambassador to the United Nations Stephen Lewis. As Canada’s oldest and most prestigious national Model United Nations conference, NAMUN has prospered and hosted many diplomats, academics, officers of the military, business leaders and thousands of students from across the globe.
Independently student run, NAMUN is exceptionally organized, maintains high academic standards, and enjoys substantial support from academic institutions and the business community. The conference strives to familiarize students with the working structure of the UN, the dynamics of international diplomacy and the most topical issues of the day. NAMUN serves as a forum in which students from Universities and Colleges around the globe can meet and debate about problems facing the world today, in areas such as security and development, human rights, economic and social progress. Importantly, at NAMUN students are invited to push the boundaries of the international system and imagine innovative solutions to the challenges faced by the global community.
Previous Secretary Generals include Maria Lee (2010), Selena Lucien (2011), Fernando Torrealba (2012), Liam Salichuk (2013).
