Norm Champ
Norm Champ is an American attorney, author, and former government official. He served as the Director of the Division of Investment Management of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Deputy Director of the SEC's Office of Compliance, Inspections and Examinations (OCIE) from 2010 to 2015.
Champ is currently a partner at Kirkland & Ellis.
He is a published author of the books Mastering Money: How to Beat Debt, Build Wealth, and Be Prepared for Any Financial Crisis and Going Public: My Adventures Inside the SEC and How to PReVENT the Next Devastating Crisis.
Early life and education
Champ received his bachelor's degree, summa cum laude, in history from Princeton University in 1985, a master's degree in war studies from King's College London, where he was a Fulbright Scholar, in 1986, and a Juris Doctor degree, cum laude, from Harvard Law School, in 1989.
Career
Law career
While attending law school, Champ worked as a law clerk for U.S. District Judge Charles S. Haight Jr. of New York. In 1993, Champ began his career in law by working as general counsel at the law firm of Davis Polk & Wardwell until 1999.
From 1999 until 2009, Champ served as executive vice president and general counsel of Chilton Investment Company. From 2007 to 2009, Champ also served as a board member of the Managed Funds Association. He also served as chairman of the association's investor protection task force.
Champ joined the investment funds group of Kirkland & Ellis, becoming a partner in the law firm's New York office in 2016.
Public service career
In 2010, Champ joined the SEC's Office of Compliance Inspections and Examinations (OCIE) as associate director of the New York Regional Office. He also went on to serve as the OCIE's deputy director. At the OCIE, he was in charge of several programs, including overseeing investment advisers, investment companies, credit-ratings agency exams and broker/dealers.
Champ was appointed director of the SEC's Division of Investment Management in 2012. During the rest of his time at the SEC, Champ oversaw monitoring of the investment management industry He oversaw the implementation of new regulations for money-market mutual funds.
For his work with the OCIE division, he received the Chairman's Award for Labor Management Relations.
Writing
In 2017, McGraw-Hill published Champ's first book, Going Public: My Adventures Inside the SEC and How to Prevent the Next Devastating Crisis.
In 2019, McGraw-Hill published his second book, Mastering Money: How to Beat Debt, Build Wealth, and Be Prepared for Any Financial Crisis.
Personal life
Champ resides in New York with his wife and four children.
