Nomadin

Nomadin (2003) is a fantasy novel written by Shawn P. Cormier, that centers around a young boy who is a student of magic. The book details his adventures upon finding himself out of the learning environment, and deep in the heart of a world that he does not understand.

Characters

Ilien Woodhill: is the novel's young protagonist. His back-story bears similarity to that of Harry Potter in that both his mother and father, are each out of the picture, and that Ilien is being raised by his uncle, Gallund. Also that throughout the book there is increasing speculation, and revelation on the topic of Ilien's birth/infancy. Ilien is also distinctly his own character, in that the relationship with his Uncle is considerably better. More than that Gallund himself is a wizard, and the one who has been teaching Ilien the art of magic, since there is not the simplistic concept of a school system in which children with the gift are rounded up and instructed in such an organized manor. It is in the teacher/student roles, that Ilien often finds himself at odds with his uncle, since Ilien is bored with the basics of magic and often tries to skip ahead to more complex magic(usually with undesirable results).
