Night of Silence

Night of Silence is a Christmas carol and Roman Catholic Advent hymn, written in 1981 by Daniel Kantor, and then published in 1984 by GIA Publications. The carol is a "quodlibet", the term used for a song that can be sung simultaneously with another song. ("Night of Silence" can be sung simultaneously with the classic Christmas carol "Silent Night"). The lyrics to “Night of Silence” are placed squarely in the Christian season of Advent, a time of spiritual emptying, darkness, longing and anticipation. By introducing "Silent Night", the song becomes a metaphor for making the transition from the dark season of Advent to the season of Light, Christmas. Since its publication by GIA, this choral work has made its way into hymnals, concert settings and recordings all over the world. Recording artists include Marty Haugen, David Haas, Yvonne Kenny and Chris Squire.
