Next Week's News (TV Show)
Next Week's News was an Irish comedy, panel show similar to BBC's Mock The Week, presented by Bernard O'Shea, which is scheduled to air every Monday night at 9.30 PM on RTE Two. The show is filmed in front of a live studio audience in the O'Reilly Theatre in Dublin. The programme made its television debut on New Year's Eve night 2013 under the name 'Next Year's News', and was presented by Eoghan McDermott, where they disguised possible news headlines of 2014 and looked back at the year past. The show's two 'team captains' are comedians PJ Gallagher and Neil Delamere originally including teammates of former Republic of Telly presenter Dermot Whelan and Cork comedian Chris Kent. As the series progressed, Tallaght comic Al Porter also made frequent appearances
Debut (Next Year's News)
The show premiered on December 31, 2013 and rang in the new year on RTE Two. TV personality Dermot Whelan was on PJ Gallagher's team and corkman Chris Kent was Neil Delamere's winning team. To celebrate the new year, the show made a time capsule where PJ put in an electronic cigarette because 'it tastes like custard creams', Dermot put in a sandwich, Chris put in a onesie and Neil put in Alan Shatter's book, 'Laura'. However, the main talking point the media grasped was the 'snorting condoms' race between Eoghan and PJ where the presenter managed the snort it up his nose and pull it out his mouth.
Series One
Following RTE's commissioning for the once off comedy programme to made into a series, frontman Eoghan McDermott was axed and replaced by television presenter and comedian Bernard O'Shea. PJ Gallagher and Neil Delamere remained as team captains with each having a new co-panelist every week. Among those who appeared during the season were Eric Lalor, Al Porter, Angela Scanlon, Phill Jupitus, Tiffany Stevenson and several others.
Cancellation
In May 2014, Next Week's News' star PJ Gallagher revealed the programme would not be returning for a second series. "The panel show is finished. We haven’t heard back about it being recommissioned for a second series so as far as I know it’s not happening. I haven’t heard anything since. It’s all about ratings. It depends who was watching and their age. It’s a shame but that’s how it goes sometimes." - PJ Gallagher.
