Nazarii Nazarov

Nazarii A. Nazarov, PhD (born 20.02.1990) – Ukrainian writer, linguist and translator, member of Ukrainian department of European Association of Journalists, editor-in-chief of scientific journal “Mova ta istoriya”.

Linguistics

In his articles and books, the linguist touches several issues:

• - human language in the context of the communication of other Earth species and problem of inter-species communication;
• - history of Ukrainian, Western-European, and Asian lexicography and etymology (PhD theses [http://scc.univ.kiev.ua/upload/iblock/7cd/dis_Nazarov%20N.A..pdf (in Ukrainian)] and articles in peer-review journals);
• - origin and community of Slavic and Indo-European poetic diction (a series of papers, published in peer-review journals in Ukraine and Hungary).

Literary works and art of book publishing

Nazarii started his literary career rather early, publishing his first poems in local press already at 14, and eventually published his first poetry collection “Escape from Babylon” (2006) at 16. Neoclassical motives of the latter were continued in the next collection, “Lampadophor” (i.e., torch-bearer of the Elysian mysteries), that won national poetry competition “Pryvitannia zhyttia” (2008). After this book, all his literary publications became self-published and appeared in limited numbers of copies for connoisseurs and libraries. The third collection, “Death of Adonis”, appeared only as publication in local literary journal “Veža”.

Limited editions

The limited editions reveals author’s predilection for writers like Milorad Pavic, Gorge Luis Borges, and Pascal Quignard, and also his will to continue the tradition of exquisitely published books (a la Williwam Morris and Kelmscott press), some of which take after Aldo Manuzio style. These books are designed by the author himself.

• “Skarbnychka” (2006), edited and compiled by N.N. multilingual collection of Ivan Franko’s poetry translations from different languages (published in 100 copies);
• “Silent languages” (2015), semiotic fables (published in 300 copies);
• “Études nostalgique” (2015), short stories about Ukrainian village life (published in 300 copies);
• “Gardens of Adonis” (2015), multilingual anthology of world poetry, translated by the author from Sumerian, Ancient and Modern Greek, Persian, and from several other languages (published in 300 copies);
• “Library of Alexandria, or Catalogue of the books that were gathered from everywhere by Aglaya Androyidi, together with short and the most complete history of wandering press” (2017) (privately published in 50 copies).

Translations

Main part of poems translated from several modern and ancient languages were gathered in the bilingual anthology “Gardens of Adonis”, where poems by Cavafy, Sachtouri, Jan Kochanowski can be read together with Homeric and Orphic hymns. Some author’s books of original writing, as “Library of Alexandria”, also contain translations from other literatures. In several Ukrainian periodicals appeared dr. Nazarov’s translation of Pico della Mirandola’s “Oratio de hominis dignitate” from Latin.

Awards

• 2011 – winner (I place) in the international competition in poetical translation from French, organized by embassy of Canada in Ukraine;
• 2009 – special prize of the jury in the competition in literary translation ‘Metaphora’ (Ukraine) for translations of Modern Greek poetry;
• 2009 – winner (I place) in the National Ukrainian competition in translation from Modern Greek language, organized by the Andriy Biletsky Centre of Hellenic studies and Greek culture;
• 2007 – winner (I place) in National literary competition ‘Pryvitannya zhyttia’ (Ukraine)
• 2006; 2007 – was awarded personal scholarship of the President of Ukraine
