At present the coalition has 175 rescue group members throughout the United States and Canada.
Current Initiatives
- Create a national Prescription [...] Program for equine rescue groups.
- Develop a Veterinary Assistance Program for equine rescue groups.
- Build a Foster Home Network for rescued horses.
- Expand the NERC Horse Rescue Mentor Program.
- Obtain funding for an Equine Rescue Assistance Fund.
- Update animal cruelty laws in every state to better protect all equine creatures.
NERC is actively advocating for the passage of the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (AHSPA) currently before Congress as HR 503 and S 311. Despite overwhelming public support to ban the atrocity of horse slaughter in the United States both the House and Senate bills are languishing in Committee due to intense lobbying by large, well financed agricultural, farming and livestock industry groups. Approximately 100,000 horses were inhumanely slaughtered in the United States is 2006.
