People with surname Nambiyar are common in South India .But Nambiyar of Avaduarkoil are different from others.

Nambiyar of Chidambaram are belong to sub sect of iyer/Brahmin called choliyal, who are considered to be is one of the oldest Pancha-Dravida Brahmins. They got their Name Choliyal beacause of their settlement in Chola kingdom.

These people have Purve sikha which is common among choliyal of Tamil nadu and Nambhoodiri of Kerala.

These People including Lord Shiva who was named as Athmanathar Constitutes munnoothioruvar (முன்னூற்றிஓருவர்)

These priests follow an ancient system of ritual, worship and temple duty which has remained unchanged for nearly two thousand years.

According to their tradition Lordsiva came in the form of Athmanathar taught them vedas.

Only a married man can be a Nambiyar that also only after performing ceremonies to became acharaya.

These people are believed to the disciple of Saint Rowshadayana.

They are closely related with sankara mutt of kanchi / kanchi kamakoti peetam.
