Mr. Pin

The Truth (novel). Mr. Pin (other names unknown) is a villain in The Truth. He is the brains of the New Firm (consisting of himself and Mr. Tulip). Mr. Pin makes the plans, and decides where they're going to go and what they're going to do, although he is open to suggestions from his partner. Both men can become violent, but Mr. Tulip has a much larger supply of it than Mr. Pin, which is one of the main reasons Mr. Pin keeps Mr. Tulip around.

The New Firm (that is, Mr. Pin, with Mr. Tulip as a tagalong) was employed by a group of "concerned citizens" to frame Lord Vetinari, in a conspiracy to get a new Patrician of Ankh-Morpork. The New Firm found a shopkeeper who happened to be the exact image of Vetinari, and planned to make it seem as if Vetinari was trying to abscond with a large amount of gold. While the ploy worked, it was touch-and-go for a minute or two--the New Firm's employers had neglected to tell Mr. Pin and Mr. Tulip that Vetinari "moved like a snake". They improvised, stabbing Vetinari's clerk, Drumknott, and pushing their Vetinari look-a-like into the hallway to "confess". The only wrinkle was the escape of Wuffles, Vetinari's terrier (The one that's actually a dog, not Sam Vimes), who ran after biting everyone in the room. Because Ankh-Morpork had myriad ways to talk to ANYTHING, the New Firm searched for Wuffles. When the Ankh-Morpork Times offered a AM$25 reward for Wuffles, hundreds of people interested in a free AM$25 showed up, as well as Mr. Pin and Mr. Tulip disguised as Omnian clergy members. They were AbOUT to kill somebody, out of principal, when the Times iconographer took a picture using "Dark Light", exposure to which makes a person feel like needle-sized icicles were pounded through every cell in one's brain. The Dark Light made Mr. Pin aware of the VERY large crowd of ghosts that were waiting for him to die so they could have a long talk with him. He ran, and threatened Mr. Slant of the Lawyer's Guild to get some more gems, and went to his employer's house, where he found the Times reporter Sacharissa Cripslock. While this was happening, Mr. Pin's sanity was eroding from his brief exposure to Dark Light. Taking her with them, the New Firm went down to the Times office to wait for William de Worde, the editor and main character of The Truth, to show up. When he did, a "rumpus" broke out, which ended up with paint tins exploding and causing a fire. Mr. Pin and Mr. Tulip took refuge in the basement--which began to fill with hot lead as the printing press in the floor above melted. When the lead got close, Mr. Pin shot Mr. Tulip, and used his partner's body to stand on. When Mr. Pin finally got out of the basement, he was convinced he was dead, but had heard about reincarnation. Out of habit more than anything else, he tried to strangle William...who, accidentally (more or less), spiked him with a paper spike. When Mr. Pin was in the Desert of the Dead, he met with Death, who obliged Mr. Pin's wish to be reincarnated by sending him back to life as a potato.
