Playing career

McCormick was drafted by the Kingston Frontenacs in the second round (26th overall) of the 1998 OHL draft. He was drafted by the Florida Panthers in the fourth round (103rd overall) of the 1999 NHL Draft, and was a member of the team's training camp rosters from 1999 to 2001, but was subsequently released to complete the season with his OHL team.

After two seasons with the Frontenacs, the right winger was acquired by the Guelph Storm early in the 1999-2000 season. He served as co-captain on the Storm for the 2000-01 and 2001-02 seasons. He was named OHL Player of the Week for the week ending March 17, 2002, after scoring three goals and four assists in three games, leading the storm to a 3-0-0-0 record. That year, the Storm were eliminated from the Memorial Cup tournament by the Victoriaville Tigres. Following the 2001-02 season, McCormick was named the Storm's Co-MVP, along with fellow team captain Kevin Dallman. McCormick earned the Storm's Co-Operators Community Involvement Award and the Leadership Award in each of his final two seasons with the team.

After his OHL career, McCormick played for three seasons with the Saint Mary's Huskies, being named the team's captain and winning the Scholastic Excellence Award for three consecutive years. During his final season with the Huskies, McCormick was one of the Maritime finalists to interview for a Rhodes Scholarship.
