Michael Maggio Emerging Designer Award
The Michael Maggio Emerging Designer Award is one of the Michael Merritt Design Awards that were inaugurated in 1993, following the death the previous year, at age of 47, of designer and teacher Michael Merritt. The award is presented to theatrical designers committed to excellence and collaboration. The Michael Merritt Endowment also gives annual scholarships to budding design students at Columbia College Chicago (where Merritt taught), Northwestern University, and The Theatre School at DePaul University.
In August of 2000, on the death of Michael Maggio, Associate Artistic Director of the Goodman Theatre and Dean of The Theatre School at DePaul University, the award for young designers was renamed to honor his memory.
