Michael Genovese (artist)

Michael Genovese is a contemporary American artist born in 1976 in Chicago, Illinois. He currently lives and works in Miami, Florida.

AbOUT

Michael Genovese's practice begins with sociocultural theories, performed through the processing of his personal experiences. The INSTRUMENTS of performance, drawing, sculpture, and painting activate through collaboration. Genovese’s work has grown out of non-academic training where he has incorporated the disciplines and materials of the applied arts within a conceptual art framework.

Projects

Genovese’s recent projects include Lo que puedes pagar (2006-2008), where through the performance of solicitation he explored cross-cultural and linguistic comparisons using affordable sign painting as a vehicle. Immigrant owned fruit-cart vendors and metal collectors were engaged to challenge ideologies of segregation, establishing a trust within inner-city communities.

Public Scribing (2008-Current), collects the thoughts and perspectives of individuals through the act of collaborative mark making. The drawings and social commentary are archived through transcribing, translating, and reinterpreting the data through others. The information is a starting point in the artist’s creative process where the source of inspiration is the unedited literal and visual information.
