Mednax

Mednax, Inc. is an American company which was set up in 1979 and now is headquartered in Sunrise, Florida. The company focuses on neonatal, pediatric subspecialties care physician services, anesthesia, and maternal-fetal services in 34 states and Puerto Rico. There are mainly two subsidiaries in the company, namely Pediatrix Medical Group and American Anesthesiology. Pediatrix was established in 1979, and is the United States' largest provider of newborn hearing screening.

History

  • 1979 – Pediatrix Medical Group was established. The company had focused on pediatric cardiology, physician services, and hearing screening since 1991.
  • 1995 – Pediatrix completed its initial public offering.
  • 1998 – Pediatrix’s services included maternal-fetal medicine physician services and launched the Research and Education Center, which is equipped with electronic medical record system and clinical data warehouse.
  • 2000 – Pediatrix University was launched as a free online CME/CNE resource for the maternal-fetal-newborn community.
  • 2007 – American Anesthesiology was founded.
  • 2009 – Pediatrix Medical Group, Inc. changed its name to MEDNAX, Inc., through the formation of a new holding company.

Operations

Pediatrix Medical Group provides neonatal, maternal-fetal and pediatric physician subspecialty services (pediatric cardiology and pediatric intensive care). Pediatrix currently employs more than 2,200 physicians in 34 states and Puerto Rico.

American Anesthesiology employs more than 1,700 anesthesia providers (about 700 physicians and 1,000 assistants.

In early 2014, MEDNAX acquired Summit Anesthesia Associates, P.A., Physicians Anesthesia Associates, P.A., and Great Lakes Anesthesia Associates, P.C. (being part of American Anesthesiology)

In 2013, the company acquired Neonatology Center of Winchester, P.C., Dayton Newborn Care Specialists, Inc. (being part of Pediatrix Medical Group)

Products and services

As of December 31, 2011, MEDNAX had 1,839 affiliated physicians providing neonatal clinical care (NICUs), 190 affiliated physicians providing maternal-fetal care (outpatient or inpatient), 108 physicians providing pediatric cardiology care (patients from fetus to adolescent with heart defects), 85 physicians providing pediatric intensive care, 43 physicians providing hospital-based pediatric care and 6 physicians providing pediatric surgical care, 411 physicians providing anesthesia care. The company provides clinical care to babies born prematurely or with complications within specific units at hospitals, primarily NICUs, through a team of neonatal physician subspecialists (neonatologists), neonatal nurse practitioners and other pediatric clinicians. Neonatal nurse practitioners are nurses who have training and education in managing the healthcare needs of newborns, infants and their families.

The company employs physicians and certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs) and anesthesiologist assistants (AAs).

In 2011, BabySteps was certified as an electronic health record module by the Certification Commission for Healthcare Information Technology (CCHIT).
