Meadows Festival
The Meadows Festival was first held on The Meadows in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1975 and ran every June until 2005. Reasons for the cancellation in 2006 included the rising cost of insurance cover. The Festival is due to return in 2008.
It was first organised by community groups including the Tollcross Residents Association (TRA), the South Side Association, Meadows and South Edinburgh Group (MaSEG) and local politicians, including Councillor George Foulkes (who became an MP and also an MSP) and local MP, (the late) Robin Cook.
The 1975 event was officially opened (in a very low key ceremony) by actor Bryan Pringle who was appearing at the nearby King's Theatre.
A wide range of activities were organised including, five-a-side football, rock concert (Saturday afternoons) and stalls selling food and junk/collectables (long before car boot sales). Taylors Fun Fair added a further dimension.
