Md. Nazrul Islam (government official)
Md. Nazrul Islam is a former officer of the Bangladesh Civil Service who served as the secretary of the Road Transport and Highways Division.
Early life
Md. Nazrul Islam was born on 5 June 1959 in Chandrakona of Sherpur Thana, Mymensingh District, East Pakistan, Pakistan, to Md. Ansar Ali and Mosammat Rezia Khatun as their first child. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in history from the University of Dhaka in 1982 and enrolled for a master's degree the following year.
Career
Islam joined the public administration cadre of the special Bangladesh Civil Service batch of 1984. He served as the upazila executive officer in Boda, Nabiganj, Bahubal, and Habiganj Sadar Upazila; deputy director of the Youth Development Department in Mymensingh; chief executive officer of the District Council in Netrokona; zonal settlement officer in Mymensingh; director general of the National Academy for Primary Education; chief executive officer of the Dhaka North City Corporation; and administrator of the Dhaka South City Corporation.
As an additional secretary, he served as the chairman of the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority. On 15 December 2016, he became a member of the Planning Commission as acting secretary and succeeded M.A.N. Siddique as the secretary of the Road Transport Division on 12 October 2017.
In November 2017, China Harbour Engineering Company attempted to bribe him with $100,000 hidden inside a tea packet. Following the directive of then-minister of Road Transport and Bridges, Obaidul Quader, the bribe was returned to the Chinese Embassy.
Although he was scheduled to retire on 4 June 2018, his tenure as secretary of the Road Division was extended for two years on a contractual basis. In 2020, his contract was extended for another two years. On 21 May 2022, he was replaced by ABM Amin Ullah Nuri.
